Davante Adams trade details: Jets reunite Aaron Rodgers and star WR with 2024 season slipping away image

Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams's name had been swirling in trade talks. While recovering from a hamstring injury, the disgruntled star decided he wanted to be moved.

He got his wish on Tuesday morning, as Adams is on the move to the New York Jets for a reunion with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Las Vegas initially acquired Adams from the Green Bay Packers to pair him with his Fresno State teammate Derek Carr. The Raiders and Carr had a falling out, which ended with the quarterback being released and signing with the Saints.

Adams spent the 2023 season playing without Carr, and had a decent season despite catching passes from quarterback Aidan O'Connell. Las Vegas signed Gardner Minshew to be its new starting quarterback in 2024. The Minshew experiment wasn't panning out so far in 2024 and Adams was frustrated enough to request a trade.

It took a week, but Vegas has granted his request and has traded him to the Jets. The Sporting News has you covered with all of the details regarding the Davante Adams trade.

Raiders WR depth chart

  • Jakobi Meyers
  • Tre Tucker
  • DJ Turner
  • Tyreik McAllister
  • Alex Bachman

Las Vegas may not be done trading. Meyers has not shown that he can be a WR1. The Raiders head into Week 6 with a 2-3 record, and sit in last place in the AFC West. Vegas may have already thrown in the towel on the season. Along with Adams being traded, the team could make a quarterback change and stick with O'Connell.

Meyers has the second-most receptions and receiving yards on the team, but he doesn't trail Adams. Tight end Brock Bowers heads into Week 6 leading the team with 28 receptions and 313 yards. Currently, no player on the team has more than one receiving touchdown, so trading away a top wide receiver was a bold move.

Tucker has been impressive this season, and will get the chance to further develop as the team's WR2. Turner is in his third season, and will now get a larger role as the team evaluates its long-term options.

McAllister and Bachman are both rookies who were undrafted. Neither has gotten a target so far, but this move could see both taking on larger roles.

Jets WR depth chart

  • Garrett Wilson
  • Davante Adams
  • Allen Lazard
  • Mike Williams
  • Xavier Gipson
  • Irvin Charles

Wilson has been the Jets' shining star since they drafted him 10th overall in 2022. That year, he went on to win AP Offensive Rookie of the Year, and many were excited to see what Rodgers could do to further help him develop.

Similar to Adams, Lazard was brought to the Jets thanks to his tenure with Rodgers in Green Bay. Thanks to how well the two know each other, Lazard has developed into a safety valve for Rodgers. While Rodgers and Adams haven't played together since 2021, the rust they need to shake off will be minimal.

Williams was the seventh overall pick by the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017. He was a solid complement to Keenan Allen when he could be healthy, but he tore his ACL in his final season in LA. Williams has shown glimpses of what made him a first-round pick, but his missteps have made the highlight reels so far in his Jets career. In the team's Week 6 loss to the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo was able to seal the victory after intercepting Rodgers on a pass intended for Williams, who had slipped and fallen during his route.

Gipson tends to get more work on special teams, returning punts and kicks. He is speedy, though, so there are times that New York utilizes this on short routes when they need to pick up a first down. Charles is in his second season, but hasn't registered more than one total target so far in his career.

Davante Adams contract

Adams was traded to the Raiders for a 2022 first and second-round pick. He was set to play under a franchise tag that season, so Las Vegas had to sign him to a new deal. The Raiders gave Adams a five-year, $141.25 million deal.

Included in this deal, the Jets are taking on the entirety of Adams' remaining contract. Vegas gets at least a third round pick and frees up a ton of cap space.

YearBase Salary
2024$11.59 million
2025$36.25 million
2026$35.25 million

Spotrac also notes that there is a potential out for Adams' contract after this season. It comes with $15.7 million in dead cap, but again this can change depending on how much money Vegas will retain.

After the trade was completed, the Jets restructured Adams' deal for the last two years. Adams will now count as $3.21 million against the cap as New York added two void years to the end of the deal, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
