The New York Yankees have improved their bullpen for the most part this offseason, but they still have a few key pieces missing.
Needing to add some talent to the left side of the bullpen, the Yankees reportedly have interest in bringing breakout southpaw Tim Hill back into the mix after his successful season in The Bronx.
They also reportedly have interest in 11-year veteran Andrew Chafin, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
Heyman reported that Chafin is "high on the Yankees’ list of lefty pen targets" along with Hill.
Chafin is coming off a solid overall season in 2024, but he struggled a bit more during the second half after he joined the Texas Rangers.
Overall, Chafin posted a 3.51 ERA in 56.1 innings pitched across 62 appearances. He struck out 70 batters and walked 31.
While his 12.6% walk rate ranked in the fourth percentile last season, he posted elite numbers in chase rate (35.1%, 97th percentile), whiff rate (34.5%, 96th percentile) and strikeout rate (28.5%, 85 percentile, according to Baseball Savant.
He also avoided hard contact, logging a 34% hard-hit rate, which would put him in the 84th percentile.
Working mostly off a slider-sinker combination, his slider generated a 54.7% whiff rate in 2024.
Considering Chafin signed a one-year, $4.75 million deal last offseason, this is a move that wouldn't break the bank or the Yankees.
