The New York Yankees have a few areas on the roster to address before spring training, but there's also a chance they simply double down on their strengths.
With the addition of elite closer Devin Williams to go along with the returns of Luke Weaver and Jonathan Loaisiga, the Yankees have a strong group to rely on during the late innings of games.
Though they still need to add some left-handed arms — Tim Hill and Andrew Chafin are options — the Yankees could still improve the strength and depth of their bullpen by reuniting with a fan favorite.
As 39-year-old reliever David Robertson searches for a new home in free agency, Eric Treuden of Just Baseball believes a return to The Bronx is a perfect fit.
"Everybody’s a sucker for a good sports reunion, and the Bronx is where Robertson initially rose to fame as the Yankees’ oft-used setup man (and eventual closer) from 2008 to 2014 and then again in 2017 and ’18. He’s bounced around a ton in recent years, but ending his storied career where it all began feels perfect," Treuden wrote.
Though Robertson is well past his prime, he's still putting together strong campaigns. Coming off another solid season in 2024, Robertson posted a 3.00 ERA with 99 strikeouts, 27 walks and a 1.11 WHIP across a career-high 72 innings.
According to Baseball Savant, his 3.19 expected ERA and .212 expected batting average both ranked in the 84th percentile. Meanwhile, he still knows how to put hitters away as his 33.3% strikeout rate ranked in the 96th percentile.
It may not be a major need, but adding Robertson to the bullpen would give the Yankees an even bigger strength in the bullpen.
