A spot in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff is on the line Saturday night, with Clemson dueling SMU in the ACC championship game.
It’s a matchup made possible by No. 12 Miami, which suffered an upset loss to No. 22 Syracuse that led to a third-place ACC finish for the Hurricanes.
The 17-ranked Tigers (9-3) are the greatest beneficiary, sneaking into the ACC championship game despite a 17-14 loss to South Carolina last week. Now, Clemson’s CFP aspirations are intact as it returns to a familiar stage; the Tigers have won seven of the last nine ACC championship games.
The eighth-ranked Mustangs (11-1) carry a nine-game winning streak into Saturday, ripping through their inaugural ACC slate with an unblemished record. SMU has scored more than 30 points in eight of its nine conference games, including last week's 38-6 win over Cal.
With a win, the Mustangs will become the first ever team to win back-to-back conference titles in two different leagues; last year, SMU won the American Athletic Conference.
