The Boston Red Sox have already upgraded their starting rotation by acquiring All-Star starter Garrett Crochet in a trade with the Chicago White Sox, but they could certainly benefit from adding another pitcher.
Over the last few weeks, reports and rumors have been flying around about Boston making another trade to land more pitching, and the Seattle Mariners have been one of the top teams involved, as they boast a rotation of young, controllable arms.
While nothing has materialized to this point, it's not for a lack of trying, as MLB insider Robert Murray reported on Tuesday that the two sides have talked. MLB insider Peter Gammons then followed up with a report of his own that chief baseball officer Craig Breslow attempted to build a deal with Seattle around Triston Casas, but the Mariners weren't biting.
"Casas is born to hit in Fenway," Gammons wrote. "Craig Breslow worked hard with Seattle, but they were not interested in Casas in their park. Ball doesn't travel. Hitting background tough."
The 24-year-old hit .241 with an .800 OPS, 13 home runs and 32 RBIs in just 63 games in 2024, as he missed months in the middle of the season due to torn cartilage in his rib.
Boston moving on from Casas now would probably be selling low, but there's still a chance he's moved at some point this offseason. There's also a possibility a trade with the Mariners gets completed for a different return.
