Red Sox top prospect provides update on extension discussion reports image

Last weekend, the Boston Globe's Alex Speier reported that the Boston Red Sox are "interested in exploring the possibility of long-term deals" with some of their top prospects, including baseball's No. 1 prospect - Roman Anthony.

Anthony, along with Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, is expected to make his MLB debut in 2025 and could even push for a spot on the Opening Day roster with a strong showing in Spring Training.

While the Red Sox have never given out an extension to a player yet to reach the majors, Anthony could be the player that changes their mind. However, to this point, there hasn't been much talking.

“To be honest, for me, I haven’t talked to anybody about it,” Anthony told MassLive this week. “It hasn’t really been a topic of conversation. It’s not really something I’m focused on. Obviously, being an 18-year-old kid drafted by the Boston Red Sox, this is the team I’ve grown to love and the only organization I know. Being a Red Sox for however long it might be would be great and I don’t want to leave. But it’s something that has been floating around that hasn’t really been a topic of conversation for us.

“I’m not really worried about money. I just want to play the game. Obviously, if it’s a route we go down and explore, I think it would be awesome just to be in conversations of that structure. But it’s not something we’ve even talked about yet.”

The 2022 second-round pick had a remarkable 2024 season between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester, hitting .291 with an .894 OPS, 18 home runs, 65 RBIs and 21 stolen bases in 119 total games.

Boston would be smart to ink him early and buy out some of those free-agent years while making the 20-year-old happy. There's also the added bonus of getting him up for the start of the year, so Boston could get an extra draft pick from the league's Prospect Promotion Incentive program.
