On Saturday, the Washington Commanders announced they are releasing 2023 first-round draft pick Emmanuel Forbes, Jr.

Forbes, a cornerback, will now have the much-needed opportunity to hit the reset button on his NFL career.

It was clear from early on in Forbes' rookie season that he might not be the best fit in Washington. He was benched multiple times and never quite found his footing during Ron Rivera's tenure, and was not considered a major future centerpiece with Dan Quinn's staff that had not drafted him.

Forbes' time in Washington ends with 45 career tackles and two interceptions in 20 games. He had appeared in only six contests in 2024.

By releasing Forbes, the Commanders are showing mercy to the young man and granting him the chance to resurrect his career elsewhere. Forbes is a talented player, as proven by the fact that he holds the all-time NCAA FBS record for most career interceptions returned for touchdowns (six).

He just needs the right opportunity, and at only 23 years old, could find it elsewhere. It's also worth noting Forbes was considered a project out of college, primarily due to his lanky frame.

Not all draft picks are hits, and when they're not, the best thing to do for both team and player is to own the mistake and let them start fresh. Commanders fans should be relieved to move on from Forbes, but should also hope that he can land on his feet.
