After the Boston Red Sox added left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet in a trade with the Chicago White Sox and catcher Carlos Narvaez in a trade with the New York Yankees, they still have more needs to address.
Arguably their biggest offensive need right now is a right-handed bat, but adding a switch hitter like outfielder Anthony Santander could help solve that problem, and according to MLB insider Hector Gomez, Boston's talks with Santander have recently intensified.
Santander, 30, signed with Cleveland as an international free agent in 2011 before the Baltimore Orioles selected him in the 2016 Rule 5 draft. He debuted with Baltimore in 2017 and has been with the club since.
In 2024, earned All-Star and Silver Slugger honors for the first time, hitting .235 with an .814 OPS, 44 home runs and 102 RBIs for the Orioles.
For his career, Santander has hit .253 with a .787 OPS, 43 home runs and 116 RBIs from the right side of the plate and .243 with a .772 OPS, 112 home runs and 319 RBIs from the left side.
Boston could use him as a designated hitter or play him in the outfield or at first base if they make another trade, and with his four-year, $80 million contract projection (via. MLB Trade Rumors), he shouldn't break the bank. However, Gomez also reported that two other American League East teams (the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees) are also showing interest in him as well.
