The Atlanta Hawks have been a huge surprise lately.
Initially viewed as a potential lottery team, the Hawks are now positioned as playoff-worthy buyers on the trade market. They’re reportedly looking to upgrade their rotation and are dangling Clint Capela for sale.
As Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz noted on Monday, Atlanta doesn’t need to make a blockbuster trade (and shouldn’t). One move that could be sneakily beneficial, though, is to acquire a former Boston Celtics combo guard from the Washington Wizards.
“The Atlanta Hawks have played excellent basketball over the past two weeks and shouldn't be looking to make any major changes to this roster right now,” Swartz said.
“Finding a backup point guard to help spell Trae Young (36.0 minutes a game, 15th-highest in the NBA) should be the goal, preferably a veteran with some playoff experience.”
“(Malcolm) Brogdon should be extremely available from the lowly Wizards.”
Brogdon won Sixth Man of the Year with Boston in 2022-23. He also won Rookie of the Year with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2016-17. His career numbers per 36 minutes are 18.9 points, 5.7 assists, and 5.1 rebounds.
The 32-year-old is in the second year of a two-year, $45 million deal. Atlanta could therefore take him on as a rental.
