Ohio State vs. Tennessee final score, results: Will Howard, Buckeyes dominate Vols to reach Rose Bowl image

The No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes shook off the disastrous late-season loss to Michigan in a big way on Saturday night. In the final game of the first-round of the College Football Playoff, Ohio State dominated the No. 9 Tennessee Volunteers 42-17. Head coach Ryan Day also silenced the loud noise surrounding his program in a big way.

Next up for Ohio State will  be the No. 1 Oregon Ducks, which beat OSU 32-31 earlier in the season in Eugene.

This was Ohio State quarterback Will Howard's best game of the season so far. He finished 24-of-29 with 311 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He rushed for another 37 yards. True freshman Jeremiah Smith was sensational, getting six catches for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Tennessee undoubtedly fell flat on the biggest stage it's been on under head coach Josh Heupel. But the Vols were severely limited on offense, as running back Dylan Sampson was hampered with a hamstring injury all night. Quarterback Nico Iamaleava finished with 47 yards rushing with two touchdowns, throwing for 104 yards.

OSU got out to a hot start in the first quarter, scoring two touchdowns on the Buckeyes' first two possessions of the game. A Tennessee muffed punt set up the Buckeyes for a third score, giving Ohio State a 21-0 lead in the first quarter.

Tennessee tried to make things interesting in the second quarter, though. The Vols picked off Howard and forced a Buckeye three-and-out, scoring 10 points off both possessions to make it an 11-point game at halftime.

But in the second half, Ohio State didn't let off the gas. The Buckeyes scored 21 unanswered points, and Tennessee's second-half possessions resulted in four punts and a turnover on downs.

Final: Ohio State 42, Tennessee 17

11:37 p.m. — Ohio State is celebrating and poking some fun at Tennessee at the same time, by smoking cigars on the sideline.

Tennessee traditionally smokes cigars after beating Alabama every year, so this is a jab from the Buckeyes towards that. Hey, smoke 'em if you got 'em right, Vols?

11:30 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Tennessee scores a touchdown off a Nico Iamaleava rushing score. It doesn't really matter, though, as this one is over.

11:26 p.m. — Tennessee has the ball back, and the Vols are at Ohio State's midfield. Let's see if the Vols can get one on the board in the second half.

11:17 p.m. — This one is winding down, as Ohio State is even putting in backup quarterback Devin Brown late in this game. Interestingly, Brown entered the portal earlier this month, but has still been practicing with the Buckeyes as the No. 2 quarterback.

11:05 p.m. TOUCHDOWN —TreVeyon Henderson gets a 24-yard touchdown run to put this game on ice. There's still 10:53 left in this one though, so there's plenty of time for the Buckeyes to pile it on. They just might if they want to make a statement.

10:58 p.m. — Facing a 4th-and-six at the start of the fourth quarter, Nico Iamaleava's pass attempt to Chris Brazzell II falls incomplete. Tennessee is running out of time in this one.

10:45 p.m. — Tennessee gets flagged for pass interference on a Will Howard pass attempt to Jeremiah Smith in the end zone. Looks like OSU will score again here.

10:42 p.m. — Ohio State is driving again, and the Buckeyes are past midfield. Tennessee needs a stop here to stay in this.

10:33 p.m. Iamaleava's third-down pass attempt from Tennessee's 43 is batted down, and the Vols will punt. There's 6:04 left in the third here.

Ohio State 28, Tennessee 10

10:25 p.m. TOUCHDOWN — Well, so much for Tennessee holding Ohio State in the second half. Howard hits Smith on a perfect pass in the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown. The throw was an absolute dime.

10:17 p.m. — On third down, Ohio State reads a Tennessee option pitch play perfectly and get the stop. The Vols punt and give the ball back to the Buckeyes.

10:11 p.m. — The second half is getting started here. Let's see how Tennessee comes out. It looks like Dylan Sampson was about to go into the Tennessee huddle, but he didn't go in the game. ESPN's Pete Thamel reports that he is questionable to return with a lower body injury.

9:43 P.M. TOUCHDOWN — And Tennessee has its first touchdown of the night! Iamaleava caps off a great drive with a two-yard rushing touchdown. This has to feel good for the Vols as they head into the locker room at halftime. Tennessee will get the ball to start the second half.

9:37 p.m. — Tennessee goes for it on 4th down and gets it. The Vols are down to Ohio State's 15, knocking on the door. Vol running back Dylan Sampson is reportedly battling a hamstring injury, per the ESPN broadcast.

9:30 p.m. —Tennessee needs some points here. The Vols forced a Buckeye three-and-out for the first time all night and have the ball back. Tennessee's driving and is down to their own 43. Unfortunately it looks like Vols receiver Squirrel White is in the locker room with an injury.

Ohio State 23, Tennessee 3

9:21 p.m. FIELD GOAL — Tennessee is finally on the board, as Max Gilbert hits a 36-yard field goal. It looked like OSU could have gotten flagged for pass interference on Iamaleava's third-down pass in the end zone, but it wasn't called.

9:17 p.m. — Wow, it looks like Iamaleava throws an interception, but Ohio State gets flagged for roughing the passer. Tennessee's drive continues.

9:12 p.m. — The Vols have a nice drive going here, and it's all Nico Iamaleava. He's two-for-two on this drive with 38 yards in the air. Tennessee still has a long way to go though, on its own 45 yard line.

9:09 p.m. — Tennessee finally has some life! Will Brooks pick off Howard in the end zone, and prevents what would have been a soul-crushing Buckeye score. Let's see if Tennessee's offense can get some points.

8:45 p.m. — Tennessee's defense has no answers so far. On 3rd-and-5, Howard hits Emeka Egbuka for 17 yards and a first down to the Tennessee 26.

8:36 p.m. — Tennessee goes three-and-out on its ensuing possession. The Vols were stopped for a loss of one and 12 yards on a Iamaleava sack on first and second down. Tennessee has -18 total yards of offense on the night. Not the start the Vols were hoping for whatsoever!
