The Toronto Blue Jays have finally signed a marquee free agent after continuously striking out this winter. They could make another splash after seemingly waiting until the last minute to kick off the offseason.
While listing landing spots for Pete Alonso after Anthony Santander signed with the Blue Jays, Bleacher Report's Jack Murray still tabbed the team as a "landing spot" for him.
"The Blue Jays have star first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. on the roster but he has spent time at third base as well throughout his career," wrote Murray. "Alonso and Guerrero also could serve as the designated hitter. However, the biggest factor to signing Alonso could be the uncertainty around Guerrero's future as he is set to hit free agency following the 2025 season. If Toronto is not confident in retaining the four-time All-Star, they could make Alonso his replacement and trade Guerrero away to recoup some value."
TSN Sports' Scott Mitchell noted that Alonso is "still in play" for the Blue Jays despite their signing Santander to a five-year, $92.5 million deal. The Blue Jays have shown they are not scored to spend, and their issue has been convincing players to sign in Toronto.
Fortunately for the Blue Jays, Alonso may not have many options left. Teams that need him may not be able to afford him, and the teams that can afford him have already found their first basemen for 2025. The prospect of signing Guerrero next winter could also make teams hesitant to commit to Alonso.
The Blue Jays would also be able to have insurance at first base for the future if they cannot extend or bring back Guerrero.
