KING POWER STADIUM, LEICESTER — The magic looks to have finally worn off for Leicester City, with relegation looming large after a 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Monday evening.

Just seven years after their miraculous Premier League title win, two years on from lifting the FA Cup, and a year removed from reaching a European semi-final, this team looks completely broken. The East Midlands crowd were defiant pregame, building a big atmosphere for a big night, but that support quickly turned into a chorus of boos.

The Foxes began well, showing some fight in the opening exchanges. Youri Tielemans and James Maddison displayed signs they were in for a season-saving performance. That didn’t materialise. Nothing came of it in the first half hour, while Liverpool couldn’t — or, possibly, just decided not to — gain any momentum going forward.

Jamie Vardy looked like a superhero whose powers had now entirely waned, just waiting to be written out of the Premier League’s cinematic universe. Pulling onto Ibrahima Konate, who could probably play Thanos, was a non-contest. Vardy’s closest comrades from the most iconic battles have now gone, and he can’t drag this new bunch to safety.

After a half-hour, Liverpool decided one of these two teams should probably pose a threat. So they did — over and over. Curtis Jones hadn’t scored an away goal since September 2021, and then it felt so nice, he decided to do it twice.

The first came after Wout Faes — who was at sixes and sevens all evening, having already had a double own-goal nightmare at Anfield earlier this season — failed to deal with a long ball forward from Alisson. The lively Luis Diaz nipped in and fed Jordan Henderson, before Mo Salah’s cross was met by the onrushing Jones at the back post.

A surprisingly-lengthy VAR call followed — perhaps one for the viewers at home, as in a Premier League-first, communication between the on-field official and his video assistant was being made public. That only slightly delayed the next Reds goal, when Salah again fed Jones. This time, the midfielder had more time, and picked his spot well.

A shell-shocked Leicester team very nearly conceded a third immediately after the restart through Cody Gakpo, who was nominally starting through the middle. The locals were already booing, as they began to fear the worst.

Liverpool’s interplay was impressive, with the front five all shifting around freely. Jordan Henderson joined Jones in camping out on the edge of the box. Trent Alexander-Arnold, meanwhile, was perpetually involved in his new quarterback role.

Liverpool took their foot off the gas in the second half, with odd bursts as they teased a potential upping of the tempo at any moment. Balls flashed across the box as they toyed with the Leicester backline. At the other end, a sole curling effort from Harvey Barnes was the only moment of note, as Alisson tipped it wide.

At one point, the Leicester fans got an Andy Robertson foul throw to cheer — a rare high point. The travelling Reds support, meanwhile, spent almost 15 minutes straight singing the “Si Señor” song of Roberto Firmino, though the Brazilian didn't even get on the pitch. Party mode was well and truly on.

The singing only stopped to celebrate a goal, again from one of their own, in Alexander-Arnold. Salah laid off a free-kick which the England international rifled into the top corner. More boos and jeers arrived, while swathes of empty seats began to appear.

"You're not fit to wear the shirt" rung down at full-time. Many Leicester fans have given up, and it’s clear to see why, on this performance. The Foxes are a point behind Leeds United, a further point adrift of Everton and safety, while local rivals Nottingham Forest carry a four-point cushion.

With two games to go — away at Newcastle United before a final-day showdown with West Ham United here — it looks bleak. This club has pulled so many rabbits out of the hat before, but surely not this time.

For Liverpool, though, the evening couldn’t have gone any better. All three goals were made by the Egyptian King and finished by Scousers. Without really needing to exert themselves, it was a resounding victory that takes their winning streak to seven.

They now need to beat in-form Aston Villa and already-relegated Southampton, while also hoping either Newcastle or Manchester United to drop points in two of their final three games, if the Reds are to salvage a place at Europe’s top table from this relatively awful season.

Leicester vs Liverpool highlights, goal updates

Final: Leicester 0-3 Liverpool

FULL-TIME: It's all over. A 3-0 victory for visitors.

88th min: A bicycle kick from Vardy finally gets the remaining Leicester fans off their feet, but it's comfortably stopped by Alisson.

79th min: Wow. Salah misses a glorious chance to add his name to the scoresheet after being played in by Gakpo, putting a one-on-one wide.

71st min: GOAL! They finally stop singing, and it's only because they have a goal to celebrate! Alexander-Arnold rifles in as Salah lays off a free-kick. Superb strike from the Scouser to make it three. A lot of Leicester fans heading for the exits already.

70th min: Liverpool fans are in party mood. Absolutely nothing is happening on the field, but in the stands, the Merseyside faithful have been singing Roberto Firmino's song for over 10 minutes straight. He's not even in the squad!

60th min: This looks like it could end up with whichever scoreline Liverpool choose. They're toying with Leicester at times. Balls are being flashed across goal, breaks are happening at will. Barnes had one long-range effort which forced a save from Alisson, but the Foxes were unable to build on it at all.

46th min: The sun has set during the course of halftime, but has it on Leicester's time in the top flight? We're back underway with a huge half ahead for the hosts.

Halftime: Leicester 0-3 Liverpool

HALFTIME: A chorus of boos ring out as the whistle blows. Leicester look broken.

38th min: After a lengthy VAR check, Liverpool break forward again instantly and very nearly get a third through Gakpo, but Iversen stands up well to deny him. The home fans are booing: this could get ugly.

36th min: GOAL! Jones has a brace, would you believe! Salah again finds him, this time with a great first-time prod to the edge of the area, and the midfielder has time to strike it well. 2-0.

33rd min: GOAL! It was coming! Liverpool go 1-0 up thanks to Curtis Jones. A long ball forward isn't dealt with by Faes and Diaz wins the header. Salah eventually gets the cross off and into the onrushing Jones at the back post.

*Video available in UK:

30th min: The only thing to break up Liverpool's monopoly of the ball was Barnes spending a couple of minutes down getting treatment, though he is fine to continue. The goalkeepers are yet to be troubled, however, with only Diaz firing an effort which struck the side netting.

20th min: Other than one genius ball from Alexander-Arnold which Gakpo couldn't quite connect with, both sides are yet to really threaten. Liverpool have settled now, though, comfortably controlling possession for the last few minutes.

10th min: Leicester have started impressively here, showing all the fight needed. Liverpool are struggling to get a foothold in the game, though the Foxes are yet to carve out a truly presentable chance. Maddison and Tielemans are in the mood.

KICK-OFF: We're underway in the East Midlands.

15 mins to KO: Luis Diaz has a chance to shine this evening, on his first start since October. Jurgen Klopp has eased him back into the side following a long-term knee injury, with a string of six straight substitute appearances. The Liverpool manager told the club's official website yesterday: "He's a natural player. I love him, absolutely love him.

"It's unbelievable. He's so football smart, moving in the right areas, naturally defending from his position, goal threat, speed, cheeky. Very, very special player, I have to say. We missed him a lot."

30 mins to KO: These two sides have played six times since there was last an away win, with that coming on Boxing Day of Liverpool's title-winning 2019/20 season. Trent Alexander-Arnold capped off that 4-0 victory with a brilliant first-time finish late on. In the two seasons since, Liverpool have lost here 3-1 and 1-0.

1 hour to KO: Team news is in. Leicester make three changes from the loss at Fulham, with Jonny Evans back in the side as captain. Ricardo Pereira returns too, as does Wilfred Ndidi. Liverpool, meanwhile, are without Darwin Nunez due to a toe injury. Diogo Jota drops to the bench, with Luis Diaz and Jordan Henderson making the XI.

1 hour 30 mins to KO: Liverpool's potential route into the Champions League next season is a tricky one, even if they secure the three points this evening. The Reds' maximum points total is 71, meaning Manchester United and Newcastle United need six points a piece from their final three games to secure a seat at Europe's top table.

Man United have a presentable run of games against mid-table opposition, in Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham. Newcastle have a difficult task against Brighton & Hove Albion at home on Thursday, before taking on Leicester and Chelsea. Liverpool end their campaign against in-form Aston Villa and already-relegated Southampton.
