Tyrone Tracy Jr. appears headed for a significant role in the New York Giants backfield.

After being selected in the fifth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Tracy enters a wide-open competition in the Giants backfield for the backup role behind starter Devin Singletary.

As the offseason workout program comes to a close this week with mandatory minicamp, it's clear Tracy is quickly climbing the running back depth chart.

According to Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com, Tracy "spent a good portion of 11-on-11 drills on Tuesday with the first team" and is already making a push for the backup role.

While Singletary is locked into the RB1 role for the Giants, there is going to be a relatively significant role open as the change-of-pace back.

Having converted from wide receiver to running back late in his collegiate career, Tracy is already the best pass-catcher in the backfield.

Where he needs to show improvement and promise is in pass protection, which is the biggest area of development for any rookie running back coming into the league.

Tracy's biggest competition for the backup role is Eric Gray, a fellow fifth-round pick from the 2023 draft.

The Iowa and Purdue product also has a chance to make an impact on special teams as a return man with the NFL's new kickoff rules.

Tracy has some intriguing upside to be a contributor early on passing downs, and it's clear he's moving up the depth chart quickly.
