The Celtics began the 2024 NBA Finals with a resounding 107-89 win over the Mavericks in front of their home crowd to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
Kristaps Porzingis returned to the court for the Celtics after missing the last two rounds with a calf strain, erupting for 20 points off the bench. Jaylen Brown also came up big with 22 points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocks. Jayson Tatum struggled with six turnovers and just 16 points, but he had 11 rebounds and five assists.
The Celtics led by as many as 29 points in the second quarter. Mavericks star Luka Doncic helped to cut that lead to eight in the third quarter, but Boston went on a 14-0 run to put Dallas away for good.
In his first NBA Finals appearance, Doncic finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds, but he had just one assist. Kyrie Irving had only 12 points on 6-of-19 shooting from the field, and rookie center Dereck Lively II had an off night with two points and five fouls in 18 minutes.
