The Boston Red Sox have a number of key contributors from their 2024 team who will hit the free agent market this offseason, including closer Kenley Jansen.
Jansen signed a two-year, $32 million deal with Boston after the 2022 season and over the course of that deal, he appeared in 105 games and posted a 3.44 ERA, 1.158 WHIP and 10.3 K/9 while converting 56 saves.
Now, at 37 years old, Jansen is set to hit the market again, and considering the Red Sox's future plans, it doesn't feel like he'll be playing in Boston again in 2025.
While there are surely other teams that will be interested in Jansen's services, what could we expect him to get in a new deal?
According to Spotrac, Jansen's projected to receive a two-year, $29.5 million deal this offseason.
They compared his production to Josh Hader (who signed a five-year, $95 million deal), Ryan Pressly (who signed for two years and $30 million), Edwin Diaz (who got $102 million over five years) and Raisel Iglesias (who signed for $59 million over four years).
The biggest difference between Jansen and the four other relievers he's compared to here is the age. Pressly was the oldest of the group when he signed at 34 years old. So, it makes sense to see Jansen projected to get a deal less than the AAV of that deal.
