Bryson DeChambeau injury updates: Why LIV golfer received physical therapy during U.S. Open Round 3 image

Bryson DeChambeau paced the leaderboard through Round 3 at the U.S. Open. But he had to take a brief break during Saturday's slate.

The 30-year-old LIV golfer requested physical therapy after 10 holes at Pinehurst No. 2 in North Carolina due to tightness in his right hip.

DeChambeau finished Saturday at 7 under overall and 3 under in just Round 3.

Here's the latest updates on DeChambeau's injury and how it could affect him heading into the final day of the 2024 U.S. Open.

9:11 p.m.: After finishing Round 3 atop the U.S. Open leaderboard at 7 under, DeChambeau commented on his right hip injury. He said he's been dealing with it for some time.

"Yeah, it was tougher to get through on a couple shots. It’s OK. I’ve had it for a long time now. It’s just something that popped up," DeChambeau said.

He pointed to the PGA Tour schedule and his own training schedule as contributing factors.

"The two weeks I had off after PGA, I was really grinding and focusing on some stuff there. I wasn’t really able to rest,” he said. “I’ve just been pushing myself a little bit, pushing the horse a bit. Consequently that’s going to happen."

9:07 p.m.: DeChambeau became the first player to break 70 in the first three rounds at Pinehurst during the U.S. Open.

6:29 p.m.: DeChambeau birdied the 11th hole after receiving treatment, putting him at 7 under par for the tournament and 3 under for the day.

6:12 p.m.: DeChambeau was seen lying on the ground in the woods receiving physical therapy on his right hip after completing the 10th hole. Overheard drone footage showed DeChambeau on the broadcast.

DeChambeau's right hip soreness is the latest ailment for the golfer, who has dealt with a handful of injuries since turning professional in 2016.

He's not opposed to playing through injury, as he showed in Round 3 of the U.S. Open. DeChambeau requested physical therapy after the 10th hole and returned to birdie the 11th.

The LIV golfer has admitted he wasn't playing at 100% during the 2022 campaign, having dealt with left hand and left hip injuries. He suffered a hairline fracture in his left hand and a torn labrum in his left hip.

"I’m probably around 80% right now," DeChambeau told Sports Illustrated. "I can’t go all out. I can’t do any speed training sessions. I can’t practice for excessive hours like I have to (be able to) figure stuff out."

He eventually opted for wrist surgery in April 2022, a few months after his hand began bothering him. He dealt with left hip pain for more than two years leading up to the 2022 season.
