The Kansas City Chiefs have lost just one game this season, but things are not as dominant as they seem. The Chiefs' defense could still use some help in the secondary.
The Chiefs pass defense has not done enough to overcome the departure of L'Jarius Sneed and the injury to Jaylen Watson. While listing potential players to help, FanSided's Lyle Graversen urged the team to sign Xavien Howard.
"Xavien Howard is probably the most talented option on this list. While he isn't young, 31 isn't completely over the hill in NFL years. Last season he played 475 pass coverage snaps and Pro Football Focus gave him a 51.9 pass coverage grade," wrote Graversen. "That's not good. For comparison, Jaylen Watson had a 74.2 coverage grade before getting injured and Nazeeh Johnson currently has a 47.8."
While Howard is not the player he once was, he could find a new gear just as DeAndre Hopkins did when he joined the Chiefs. Being on a winning team can go a long way.
Howard was an All-Pro in 2020 when he had 10 interceptions and 20 passes defended. He signed a five-year, $90 million deal with the Dolphins before the 2022 season. However, injuries, cap space and a slight decline led to the Dolphins releasing him before the season. He had just seven interceptions since the end of his All-Pro season.
The Chiefs do not need Howard to be an All-Pro, while they would not complain. They just need him to be a little bit better than what they are getting. A player with Byard's skillset and pedigree being available is surprising. His character concerns may be the reason why, but Andy Reid has built a reputation for giving players second chances.
