Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has become one of the most talked-about coaches in European football.

But his future could involve a major decision, with the Spaniard linked with a number of different jobs.

Why Alonso rejected Man Utd?

Over the summer, United reportedly considered Alonso for their managerial position, but the former Liverpool midfielder politely declined.

According to reports via The Mail, his loyalty to his old club, Liverpool, made him reluctant to take over at their rivals, United. The club eventually decided to stick with Erik ten Hag, extending his contract.

However, Alonso's success at Leverkusen hasn’t gone unnoticed. Under his guidance, the team has made an impressive start in both the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Manchester City are now reportedly keeping a close eye on Alonso as a potential successor to Pep Guardiola if the Spaniard leaves the Etihad Stadium. With Alonso’s previous experience playing under Guardiola at Bayern Munich, some believe he could be a perfect fit.

Alonso's Leverkusen remain strong contenders in the Bundesliga as they look to defend their title.

With goals pouring in and back-to-back Champions League victories, it seems Alonso’s stock continues to rise.

While he may have said no to United, a Premier League move could still be on the horizon for Alonso, with Manchester City and even Real Madrid keeping tabs on his next steps.
