The New England Patriots were wearing shells on Thursday, but the players were wearing full pads for Friday's training camp session behind Gillette Stadium.
New England has less than a week to prepare for their upcoming preseason battle with the Carolina Panthers, and they have a lot of work to do before then.
Here's what happened during the Patriots' eighth day of training camp:
Participation/Attendance
- Wide receiver DeMario Douglas started in a regular jersey but switched to non-contact later on.
- Cornberack Shaun Wade is still wearing the non-contact jersey.
- Safety Jabrill Peppers returned to practice after missing the last two.
- Linebacker Sione Takitaki (PUP), center Jake Andrews (PUP), guard Cole Strange (PUP), wide receiver Kendrick Bourne (PUP) remain out.
- Safety Joshuah Bledsoe, cornerback Marcus Jones, offensive tackle Tyrone Wheatley, tight end Jaheim Bell, defensive lineman Christian Barmore and safety Marte Mapu didn't participate.

- Offensive lineman Vederian Lowe started at left tackle for the second straight day.
- Winners in 1-on-1s included Javon Baker (over Alex Austin), JuJu Smith-Schuster (over Austin), Brendan Schooler (over La'Michael Pettway), Baker (over Marcellas Dial), Ja'Lynn Polk (over Christian Gonzalez), Baker (over Isaiah Bolden).
- Tight end Austin Hooper had a tough drop in 11-on-11s
- Linebacker Matthew Judon played just the first snap of 11-on-11s and was in and out.
- Offensive lineman Mike Ownenu continued his dominance in 1-on-1s.
- Polk and offensive lineman Calvin Anderson both suffered injuries but were able to return at points.
- Quarterback Jacoby Brissett finished his first 11-on-11 period with a nice throw to Hooper.
- Douglas, Polk, Jalen Reagor and K.J. Osborn worked on kick returns.
- Brissett hit Douglas on a slot fade for a touchdown in red zone.
- Osborn made a high-point grab against Gonzalez.
- Baker beat Bolden, and Maye hit him on a tight window throw.
- Maye hit a wide-open Pettway against Schooler.
- Guard/center Atonio Mafi had a botched snap.
- Brissett led a 13-play two-minute drive, resulting in a Douglas touchdown.
- Joe Milton III got very few 11-on-11 reps. Bailey Zappe didn't get any. Neither saw action in 7-on-7s.
- Chad Ryland made all five of his field goals while Joey Slye made four of his five, missing from 48 yards.
- Many called this a great session for Brissett and Baker, who lit it up.
