The Boston Red Sox finished the 2024 season with an even 81-81 record, as they failed to make the postseason for the third year in a row.
As the calendar flips to the offseason, the Red Sox need to make strides this offseason to become contenders in 2025 and beyond. They have some talent on the major league roster and prospects who could make a difference potentially debuting, but they need more veteran support.
One name that Boston should be looking at in the coming weeks and possibly months is left-handed starter Blake Snell, who opted out of his deal with the San Francisco Giants on Friday.
Snell has been incredible throughout his nine-year career with the Giants, Tampa Bay Rays and San Diego Padres, posting a 3.19 ERA, 1.217 WHIP and an 11.2 K/9 (the highest in MLB history) while winning two Cy Youngs and receiving one All-Star nod.
This past season, Snell recorded a 3.12 ERA with a 1.048 WHIP and a 12.5 K/9 in 20 starts (104 innings) and threw a no-hitter.
Boston has some interesting arms in their rotation, including Lucas Giolito, Tanner Houck and Brayan Bello, but adding Snell could be part of the puzzle to take them to the next level. He's expected to receive a five-year deal worth roughly $131.39 million (according to Spotrac), and considering that the John Henry and company aren't drowning in large contracts, they could afford to bring him in.
