Following what was one of the most controversial finishes in the history of the Kentucky Derby, horses and riders head to Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore for the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown — the 2019 Preakness Stakes.
While neither Kentucky Derby winner Country House nor Maxium Security — the horse that crossed the finish line first, only to be disqualified 22 minutes later — are participating in the race, four horses that ran in the "Run for the Roses" will also be at Pimlico (War of Will, Improbable, Bodexpress and Win Win Win). The short two-week turnaround time makes many trainers hesitant to run a horse in both the Preakness and Kentucky Derby.
Bob Baffert is looking to become the first trainer to win the Preakness eight times. His horse Improbable is coming off a disappointing fourth-place finish in the Kentucky Derby but is likely to go off as the morning line favorite at Pimlico.
LIFE OF A CHAMPION GELDING
When sex doesn't follow Kentucky Derby glory
Horse racing fans may be deprived of a Country House Triple Crown bid — the first time the Kentucky Derby champion hasn't run at the Preakness since 1996 — but there are a few other storylines to root for.
Alwaysmining will be a hometown favorite as he looks to become the first Maryland-bred horse to win the Preakness since Deputed Testamony did so in 1983. Alwaysmining is entering on a bit of a hot streak, the winner of his last six races. Adding to his local charm, his trainer Kelly Rubley is a former middle school science teacher.
If 12 horses run, as is anticipated, it would be the largest Preakness field since 14 horses ran in 2011. Saturday's race will be the 144th running of the Preakness. The track is 1 3/16 miles — the shortest of the Triple Crown tracks. The winning horse takes home $1.5 million.

2018 Preakness Stakes winner
Justify won the 2018 Preakness en route to winning the 13th Triple Crown. He beat Bravazo by half a length on a muddy and extremely foggy track with visibility reduced to just 1/16 of a mile. Justify was trained by Bob Baffert and jockied by Mike Smith. Smith said he will be atop Baffert's Improbable this year as Baffert looks to break R. Wyndham Walden's record of seven Preakness victories.
