Any realistic chances Tiger Woods had of challenging for a Claret Jug at the 2022 Open Championship are long gone after his opening round at the Old Course at St. Andrews.

Indeed, they may have disappeared at the outset, when he became the first golfer of the tournament to hit the stream surrounding the green on Hole 1. That ultimately resulted in an opening double bogey for the golf legend.

He followed that up with bogeys on Hole 3 and 4, plus another double bogey on Hole 7, setting him up for potentially one of the worst major rounds of his career (he finished the front nine with a score of 5-over 41). He was able to offset some of his mistakes with birdies on 9 and 10 but then lost strokes again with bogeys on 11 and 13.

Another birdie on 14 was offset by a bogey on 16. He finished with pars on the final two holes for an opening-round score of 6-over 78. In all, he finished with five bogeys, two double bogeys, three birdies and eight pars.

At the moment, it appears as though Tiger will not compete for the 2022 Open Championship title. He's in danger of missing the cut as the line appears to be even par following two rounds.

Tiger Woods results, highlights at Open Championship

All times Eastern.

4:08 p.m.: Tiger couldn't make the birdie putt, as he sent it just by the hole. He makes it coming back to record a par on the final hole. He finishes the day at 6 over and tied for 146th in the tournament.

4:06 p.m.: Tiger chooses to go with the putter, as expected, and gets it up the big slope. However, it didn't have nearly enough speed to get it to the hole. He has a chance at a mid-length birdie putt to finish the day.

3:59 p.m.: Tiger's drive off the tee is a good one, but it took a knock off a mound on the course and couldn't roll over the slope onto the green. It was on a great line right at the hole. He should still be able to putt it from just off the green, if he so desires.

3:56 p.m.: Tiger is heading to the 18th now, which is a driveable Par 4 at which numerous players have had eagle opportunities. His day on the course won't be considered good by any stretch, but perhaps he can build positive momentum going into cut day with a good tee shot.

3:55 p.m.: Tiger's birdie putt on 17 gets close to the hole, but he doesn't quite get it there. He makes the short, right-to-left moving putt to make par at The Road hole. He remains at 6 over through 17 holes.

3:45 p.m.: Tiger's drive actually rode into the rough, but he had a good lie. He clubs it on the green in two, keeping it short of the hole by 17 yards. He will have a long birdie putt but should at least have a chance to position himself for par on the course's toughest hole.

3:39 p.m.: Tiger begins the 17th hole with a solid shot off the tee. He keeps it in the fairway on The Road Hole but will need to be cautious on his approach as he looks to avoid the road behind the hole and the infamous Road Hole Bunker to the left of it.

3:37 p.m.: Tiger was off-line a bit off the tee and landed in the rough. He had a good angle toward the hole nonetheless, but he couldn't control it and shot it over the green. Another solid, long putt from off the green sets him up with a makeable par putt, but Tiger's struggles on the green continue. He misses the short par putt, setting himself up for yet another short bogey. He's now 6 over through 16 holes.

3:25 p.m.: Tiger sets himself up nicely for a second birdie in as many holes, shooting straight down the center of the fairway and landing center of the green, 21 feet from the pin. But he overshoots the birdie attempt and settles for a footlong par. He's still 5 over after 15 holes.

3:06 p.m.: (For those curious, the remainder of Round 1 will broadcast on NBC/Peacock).

2:58 p.m.: Tiger hits his third birdie of the day to get back to 5 over through 14 holes.

2:54 p.m.: Fantastic effort from Tiger, whose lag putt over the ridge drops within a foot for a birdie attempt. He stands to get one back here barring a disastrous stroke here.

2:48 p.m.: Great drive not quite undone by the approach, but Tiger's got a tough two-putt for birdie.

2:44 p.m. Tiger has yet to take his second shot. The tournament has come to a halt on the 14th, for whatever reason.

2:28 p.m.: Tiger hits a high, arching bomb down the fairway on the par-5 14th. He's got to love that. In fact, his 412-yard drive is the longest of the day:

2:16 p.m.: Missed. That's another bogey, at least, undoing the good work he did on Holes 10 and 11. He's back to 6 over through 13 holes.

2:13 p.m.: Decent attempt, but Tiger is still looking to save par from 18 feet.

2:07 p.m.: Sure enough, Tiger can only hit the center of the green, where it rolls a long way away from the hole. This is a lag putt's lag putt coming up, from 107 feet.

2 p.m.: Tiger's drive hits the tall stuff, just below the ridge. That doesn't leave him with a great way of attacking the pin, which is on the right side of the green some 200 yards away.

1:54 p.m.: Lipped out. Tiger's frustrated as he picks the ball out of the hole following a par. He remains 5 over through 12 holes.

1:45 p.m.: Nice chip-out for Tiger, who gets within 5 feet of his third birdie of the day.

1:38 p.m.: Tiger's drive bounces off the rough, across the fairway back into the tall stuff on either side. He'll need to take a look at this lie.

1:25 p.m.: Tough break for Tiger, whose par attempt holes out. He'll have a three-putt bogey, taking the momentum out of his consecutive birdies. He's back to 5 over through 11 holes.

1:23 p.m.: Tiger's cautious approach seems to have backfired. His putt was a little slower and broke off. Now he's looking at a 6-footer to save par.

1:15 p.m.: Tiger goes with the 6-iron on the par-3 12th hole. Seems to take a more cautious approach and set himself up for a lag-putt birdie on the green.

1:05 p.m.: Tweet tweet. That's a second straight birdie for Tiger, who is now 4 over through 11 holes.

1:01 p.m: What an approach by Tiger, whose approach stops a 3 feet short of an eagle. That's another great look at birdie.

12:55 p.m.: Tiger's on the fairway and seems to like his shot. Onward.

12:47 p.m.: Well, he certainly didn't make it easy for himself, but Tiger has his first birdie of the round on Hole 9 (and walks away with a knowing smile). He finishes the front side of the course with a 5-over 41.

12:44 p.m.: Tiger leaves himself about 6 or 7 feet for birdie. No risk of bogey here, but missing here would be devastating for his chances to make the cut.

12:36 p.m.: Great drive by Tiger, whose ball lands on the green and rolls into the second cut. He's looking at an up-and-down for birdie, his best shot at birdie so far, it would seem.

12:31 p.m.: Par it is. Tiger is 6 over through eight holes.

12:28 p.m.: Tiger's ball ended up landing in the second cut; he gets a nice chip out of the taller stuff onto the green. Looks like he'll have a foot or two for par.

12:22 p.m.: Tiger doesn't seem to like his drive on the par-3 eighth. Wherever his ball landed, the camera couldn't find it.

12:16 p.m.: No such luck. He misses it left and that's a two-putt double-bogey. With that, Tiger is 6 over through seven holes.

12:15 p.m.: Tiger's in decent position to bogey from 8 feet out. That might be a victory at this point.

12:09 p.m.: Bad to worse for Tiger. His approach on Hole 7 isn't on the green, and he has to wedge from the fairway to salvage par. He's in danger of losing another stroke.

12:03 p.m.: He pulls it left on the seventh hole; the telecast says he hit the bunker on the 12th hole, which is, in a word, not ideal.

12:03 p.m.: Tiger backs off the tee on Hole 7. Maybe waiting for the wind to die down?

12:02 p.m.: Tiger does indeed get the up-and-down par to remain 4 over through six holes.

11:54 a.m.: Tiger hates his approach (again), as he made apparent with a look of disappointment. He misses the green and looks to be 40 yards away from the pin, in the trench.

11:48 a.m.: A fantastic drive by Tiger down the left-hand side of the fairway. Let's see how he manages his approach, which has cost him quite a bit so far today.

11:40 a.m.: Tiger centers it to salvage par. He remains 4 over through five holes.

11:40 a.m.: His putt stops about 3 feet left of the pin. He's in position to salvage par, but this is, at best, a lost opportunity for Tiger.

11:37 a.m.: Tiger gets out of the trench but skies it 20 feet past the hole. He'll have that lag putt for birdie.

11:30 a.m.: Tiger's approach lands in the trench just in front of the green. Still in play for an up-and-down birdie but he'd have liked to hit the green there.

11:21 a.m.: Tiger stays left again on the fairway, but still has a chance to get one back on the par-5 fifth. This is a gotta-have-it hole.

11:10 a.m.: That's a three-putt bogey on Hole 4. Tiger is 4 over through four.

11:08 a.m.: USA Network again cuts to Tiger on the green, skipping his approach. He looks to make a lag-putt birdie but falls a 6, 7 short. Going to need to start getting a few of those back.

10:55 a.m.: Tiger went all-in on that drive; he hits the rough stuff in the center of the course but it hops out back onto the green. There's a bit of a down slope but otherwise not bad.

10:46 a.m.: The telecast moves away from Tiger for a bit and cuts back to him attempting a 12-foot par attempt. He misses right and drops another shot to go 3 over through three holes.

10:36 a.m.: Another drive by Tiger goes left but stays on the fairway. Lots of rolling hills and depressions on the course help keep it in play.

10:27 a.m.: Hell of a putt by Tiger, who nearly holes it from long range. It just passes left, and he'll have a tap-in putt for par. Great rebound after a disastrous first hole.

10:24 a.m.: Tiger flies his approach on Hole 2, but it rolls back onto the green. He's looking at a 30-footer for birdie.

10:18 a.m.: Tiger's drive goes left and stays left. He's on the fairway and has avoided the bunker. Onward.

10:15 a.m.: Tiger somehow misses the 2-footer and now has a double-bogey after one hole. Not ideal, but he's got 35 holes left to play to make the weekend cut. He's 2 over after Hole 1.

10:12 a.m.: Tiger takes a penalty and looks to chip over the water again for par. He just misses and will settle for a Hole 1 bogey.

10:08 a.m.: Tiger's shot is no good. He kicks up some sand out of the divot on his approach shot and then hits the front-side water hazard — reportedly the first golfer to do so in Round 1.

10 a.m.: Tiger goes with the iron down the left-center side. We're off!

9:58 a.m.: Tiger's out on the green. He'll be teeing off here shortly.
