The Tennessee Titans entered the year hoping Will Levis would prove himself as the team’s future franchise QB.
Levis — who the Titans drafted in the fourth round out of Kentucky last year — has been wildly inconsistent to say the least. He’s thrown for just under 2,000 yards with a completion percentage of 63.7 with 12 touchdowns and another 12 interceptions.
There have been times he’s shown off his huge arm and connected on receivers in stride for a perfect touchdown bomb. Then there have been others where he looks completely unprepared for the NFL level, with a few turnovers that were so bad they went viral on social media.
On Tuesday. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler reported the Titans are benching Levis and plan to start Mason Rudolph the remainder of the season.
It’s clear that Levis’ future in Tennessee is murky to say the least.
At this point, it’s difficult to see a path where Levis gets another chance as the Titans starting QB — and unless he’s willing to accept a backup role which could be in the cards — it’s fair to assume he will attempt to find a job elsewhere in the NFL this offseason.
Titans head coach Brian Callahan — who took the job over the offseason — inherited Levis, but continued to stick by him despite stats showing he’s likely not the answer. The Titans — with Levis as the starter — ranked in the bottom five of the NFL in both total offense (301 yards allowed per game) and scoring (18.1 points per game).
Callahan believed he could get the most out of the former Kentucky star QB, but the inconsistency and costly turnovers continued week after week. There was even a point where Callahan said he wanted the Titans job because of Levis, but he has to protect his own career at this point, and while the franchise QB is almost certainly not on the current roster, Tennessee could add a veteran in free agency or will have a solid draft pick to select a rookie in the 2025 class.
For now, Rudolph will close out the year — and anyone with a pulse on the NFL — understands he isn’t the long-term answer. But Levis clearly isn’t either.
