At least he’s having fun with it.
In the heat of his free agency, with fans, front offices, and reporters looking for any sign of where he will sign, New York Yankees star free-agent Juan Soto took to Instagram to announce a decision -- about endorsing an energy drink.
The ad, launched on Instagram, is billed on Instagram as “the announcement you’ve been waiting for.”
Soto starts off by saying “This wasn’t an easy decision,” and goes into how he’s been meeting with teams and looking for the right fit. Then the 26-year-old slugger smiles and puts on a hat with the “Celsius,” brand logo on the front. He then just says “Team Celsius.”
The post received nearly two million views in the first two hours and the reaction was immediate. Fans of the teams involved in the Soto sweepstakes looked for clues in the ad.
The conspiracy theories ranged from one fan pointing out that celsius is the temperature measurement used in Toronto, so this was a clue he would sign with the Blue Jays to another pointing out that Celsius is sold at Fenway Park.
Other fans promised to “drink nothing but Celsius” for the rest of their lives if Soto would just come back to the Yankees and others just begged him to wrap up the mystery because “it's stressing me out.”
Another group found the post funny, including former Major League All-Star Robinson Cano and current Yankees prospect Jasson Dominguez. They both left crying-laughing emojis in the comments on Soto’s post.
Soto seems to be closing in on a decision. As reported earlier Tuesday, four teams have submitted offers and insiders expect he and his agent Scott Boras to have a decision next month at the annual MLB Winter Meetings.
