Padres designated hitter Luis Arraez had to be carted off the field in the first inning of Sunday night's game against the Astros.
Up second in the game and with a man on first, Arraez laid down a drag bunt that first baseman Christian Walker went to field. Houston second basemen Mauricio Dubón then covered first base, and his momentum took him into Arraez, who was trying to beat the play out.

Arraez remained on the ground and needed assistance coming off the field, resulting in an 11-minute delay between pitches. He was ultimately carted off the field and taken back for further evaluation.
So far this season, Arraez has played in every game for San Diego. Here's an update on Arraez after he had to leave the game.

Luis Arraez injury update
Arraez's head and neck area hit Dubon's forearm, and the designated hitter immediately went down to the field. Medical personnel went out to check on Arraez in what would become an 11-minute delay.
Arraez had to be carted off the field, as he was unable to sit up himself. Once the cart came on the field, personnel stabilized Arraez's neck and put him on a stretcher before carting him off.
After Arraez left the game, the Padres announced that he had been transported to Houston Methodist Hospital and was "currently stable, conscious, responsive, and able to move his extremities."
During the game, Padres manager mike Shildt spoke with ESPN's Buster Olney about the Arraez injury.
"Luis is a really really tough guy and to see him down like that you know something is pretty serious. Took a pretty good blow," he said, via MLB.com. "Sounds like he's stable now, has feeling in his extremities. Is alert, aware of what took place which is clearly good. Now we're worried about, because he's got a little bit of a cut on the jaw, worried about the jaw and what’s the stability of that. And of course the cervical, making sure it's stable as well."
However, it seems like Arraez avoided a more serious injury.
Kevin Acee reported that Arraez was able to rejoin his teammates in the locker room after the Padres 3-2 win over the Astros. While Arraez will remain in Houston overnight, the plan is for him to rejoin San Diego in Detroit tomorrow afternoon.

At his postgame press conference, Shildt said that Arraez's diagnosis was "the best case scenario."
"We think he's, for the most part, out of the woods, more time will tell," Shildt said. "The initial testing is very favorable."
Shildt said that Arraez had moments where he wasn't sure of his surroundings, but evertything is "coming back to him." Additionally, Arraez has no fractures and is only dealing with lacerations on his jaw.
