Juventus vs. Man City final score: UEFA Champions League result, updates, stats as Vlahovic, McKennie leave Guardiola staring at UCL KO image

Dusan Vlahovic and Weston McKennie fired Juventus to a stirring 2-0 win in the UEFA Champions League to pile more misery on Pep Guardiola and Manchester City.

The ailing Premier League champions have now won only once in their past 10 matches and are in very real danger of missing out on a top-24 place in the league phase and the knockout stages of Europe's top competition.

City dominated possession for large periods at the Allianz Stadium but, to repeat one of the themes of their slump, lacked cutting edge as Erling Haaland cut a sometimes forlorn figure.

The other hulking No. 9 on the field, Vlahovic, opened the scoring early in the second half and, after a Bianconeri defence marshalled expertly by Federico Gatti soaked up mounting waves of pressure, substitute McKennie made the points safe on the counter-attack.

Thiago Motta's side, who had drawn each of their past four matches, move on to 11 points and are fairly sure of at least a place in the knockout playoffs.

City are three points further back and looking nervously over their shoulder ahead of what might be a do-or-die trip to Paris Saint-Germain in January.

Before the match, Guardiola insisted the injury list that has cloaked City's ongoing misery was no excuse for his players. They largely took his message on board, going back to basics to hog the ball with long, methodical spells of possession.

It wasn't the sort of stuff to set the pulse racing but a moment of magic from Kevin De Bruyne released Haaland to attempt a dinked finish. Michele De Gregorio produced an excellent save in what would prove to be a pivotal moment.

Vlahovic was also feeding off scraps but after Ederson saved a scissors-kick from the marauding Gatti, City were slow to react and the Brazil goalkeeper could not keep the Juve striker's header out.

City then produced their most incisive period of the contest but Juve made a succession of blocks, De Bruyne drove past the post and De Gregorio denied Ilkay Gundogan.

But when the Bianconeri broke with 15 minutes to play, despite Rico Lewis' initial success in stopping Timothy Weah, there was a sense of inevitability the McKennie would land the finishing blow with a sweetly taken volley. The moment represented the first time in Champions League history that one American international assisted another for a goal.

The result eases mounting pressure on Motta, while Guardiola must lift his fallen, bereft champions for a derby showdown with Manchester United on Sunday.

Juventus vs. Man City live updates, highlights, and commentary

Fulltime

City experience the increasingly familiar feeling of disappointment. They controlled this game for long periods in Turin but were tentative in attack, something probably explained by how vulnerable they are in transitions. That was highlighted once again by both goals from what is far from a vintage Juventus side. The Manchester derby is up next for Pep Guardiola's side, who are in a rut unlike anything he has experienced in his historic career.

89 mins: Another long period of City possession. Lewis's shot is deflected into De Gregorio's gloves. He wants a penalty for handball but that's not happening, even in this competition with it's bizarre interpretation of that law.

86 mins: De Bruyne, who has been excellent in a losing cause tonight, drills in a cross but again there's no one looking likely for City in the box. Silva gets in an argument with Gatti and De Gregorio and gets booked. That's awfully contructive.

84 mins: City have not found a similar response to going behind this time. They look completely sapped. Savinho is on for Doku but has not made any sort of impression.

74 minsGOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Weston McKennie!!!!

Smash and grab and that'll be the three points for Juve. The hosts have been under the cosh since going ahead but there's room to break. Lewis gets in the way of Weah at the first attempt but the cross comes in for his USMNT team-mate McKennnie who smashes home an acrobatic volley.

72 mins: City work a corner to De Bruyne outside the box and he lifts this one over.

68 mins: Nice save from De Gregorio, who scrambles across to tip a Gundogan effort out of the top corner. City take the corner quickly, nice interplay before Gatti flies in last-ditch. Messers Chiellini and Bonucci will be looking on approvingly.

66 mins: De Bruyne lines up a low drive from 25 yards. Wide, but I'm not sure De Gregorio was getting there if it was on target.

65 mins: Juve can't keep turning over possession like this. More black and white bodies in the way to deny De Bruyne. City knocking more loudly at the door.

63 mins: De Bruyne releases Doku, who drills across goal but Haaland has made a different run. City should have made more of that.

61 mins: Yildiz clatters a cross that Ederson can't get hold of. City manage to scramble clear but Grealish and Haaland are unable to get the counter-attack going.

59 mins: Nice play from Grealish, to Silva whose shot is cleared behind by Danilo. De Bruyne's corner is another poor one.

58 mins: But it means City are going to leave opportunities on the break. Lewis gets back to thwart Conceicao on this occasion. Phil Foden is warming up.

57 mins: City look to respond and there are Juve bodies on the line to deny Doku and Lewis in quick succession.

53 minsGOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!!! Dusan Vlahovic!!!

Juve get the breakthrough! Gatti drives a counter-attack and draws a fine save from Ederson with a scissors-kick. The hosts pick up the pieces, City put no pressure on the ball and, despite Ederson's best efforts, he can't keep out Vlahovic's header from Yildiz's cross.

50 mins: De Bruyne in that position he likes down the right channel. Nice ball to pick out Gundogan, whose shot is blocked.

47 mins: Nice play from Thuram allows Conceicao to win a corner off Doku. Koopmeiners' delivery is half-cleared, Yildiz slices a shot back towards the taker, who is offside.

Kickoff: 2nd Half

We're back. You ne ver know, some stuff might happen...

Halftime

Juve end the half with a rare attack, go down a bit of a blind ally and the whistle goes before they can take a throw-in. That probably sums up a very tentative half from Thiago Motta's men. These are two teams whose confidence has taken a bit of a battering lately. City have been the better side. However, at their best, you fancy they'd have chewed up this Bianconeri and spat them out. In their current reality, Guardiola will be happy enough.

44 mins: It's getting a bit feisty inside that six-yard box. De Bruyne's in-swinger is cleared and Lewis can't make a clean contact with the bouncing ball.

43 mins: The Belgian maestro spotted a gap at the near post there but Thuram is wise to it and heads behind.

42 mins: Conceicao knows all about the dangers of a livewire, dribbling winger. I'm not sure his team-mates will thank him for clouting Doku up in the air though. De Bruyne over the free-kick.

40 minsHere's a chance for Haaland... saved by De Gregorio! Fabulous, deft pass from De Bruyne that Haaland tries to match for impudence with a dinked finish. The Juventus goalkeeper reads it superbly. Juve go up the other end and Locatelli thuds one into Ederson's gloves from distance.

37 mins: Now Grealish finds Haaland, probably delaying the pass a little too much. Haaland crosses - I'm not sure who he thinks might be there - and Thuram chests back to De Gregorio.

36 mins: More patient, zipping City possession. De Bruyne's cross is blocked, half a chance for Haaland to shoot on the turn but there are bodies in the way.

33 mins: Koopmeiners runs into Clement Turpin and the referee looks in a bit of pain! He's going to soldier on.

31 mins: Walker probably isn't a fan of the late offside flag. It comes to his aid here, but only after the livewire Yildiz has given the struggling veteran a going over.

29 mins: Lovely turn inside from Yildiz, who's looked the most likely of Juve's creators. Vlahovic gets past Walker but can't get the ball under his spell. It runs too wide and City are able to mop up.

24 mins: Now De Bruyne gets to the byline inside the box on the underlapping run. He looks for Haaland but the big No. 9 is crowded out.

23 mins: De Bruyne and Gundogan combine smartly inside the Juve box. The ball comes across to Doku and his attempt is booted out of the goalmouth. The game is getting a bit more stretched.

22 mins: Conceicao has Lewis in his sights again. He cuts it back to about 12 yards out. No Juve player reads it but Silva does smartly.

19 mins: Locatelli produces a searching cross that Gvardiol heads out towards Yildiz about 25 yards out. That's a sweet strike from the Turkish teenager and it whistles just past Ederson's left post.

17 mins: Some nice feet form Silva wins City a corner but it comes to nought.

16 mins: Another interesting set-piece position for De Bruyne and another disappointing outcome as a tame, floated delivery is cleared.

15 mins: That looks more like a Thiago Motta side: Juve harry City in their own third and Walker ends up clattering the ball out for a throw.

14 mins: De Bruyne takes is short, exchanging passes with Doku. Juve clear, City retain possession. We're still waiting for any notable goalmouth action.

13 mins: Savona brings down Doku about 25 yards out on the left. Nice angle for De Bruyne...

10 mins: Koopmeiners overcooks the delivery. That's a waste. Timothy Weah is warming up in case Conceicao doesn't manage to run his knock off.

9 mins: Lewis gets himself in a mess against Conceicao, who's still down and in pain as Juve wait to take the resulting corner. The Portugal winger looked like he was fouled, in all honesty. A corner will have to do.

5 mins: Juve get their first foray of the night in behind the City defence. Vlahovic thinks he's won a corner off Dias but the offside flag goes up. That City line has not been especially settled or reliable of late but they did their job there.

2 mins: City hogging possession and Juve not fully committing to their press just yet. Interestingly, De Bruyne has been doing a bit of quarterbacking in the right-back position. He attacks down the same flank and looks for Haaland but De Gregorio claims the cross smartly.

Kickoff: 1st Half

City's pre-match huddle draws whistles from a pumped-up Bianconeri crowd.  Now we're underway.

5 mins before kickoff: The players are in the tunnel and the Allianz Stadium lights show is in operation. Here they come.

30 mins before kickoff: City's previous outing in the Champions League was arguably the most damaging game of their recent slump. Sure, they took a point from the game against Feyenoord, but it would have been unthinkable at pretty much any point over the past seven years that Guardola's all-conquering team would let a 3-0 lead at home slip with 15 minutes to go. But that's exactly what happened.

1 hour before kickoff: Here's the Juve XI. Dusan Vlahovic is fit to start after his weekend return. Experienced Brazilian defender Danilo is selected as captain against his former club. USMNT duo Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie will have to wait to make their impact from the bench.

1 hr 15 mins before kickoff: The teams are in. City have the same patched-up back four that played out a 2-2 draw at Crystal Palace, with Kyle Walker at fault for both goals before Rico Lewis was sent off. Guardiola is shy on defensive options in defence. The same can be said in midfield, where Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne all start for the third time in a week despite the Manchester derby being on the horizon this Sunday. Ederson comes back in having lost his place to Stefan Orteta for the past three Premier League matches.

1 hr 35 mins before kickoff: City opened their Champions League campaign against Serie A opposition this season, sharing a goalless draw with Inter Milan at the Etihad Stadium in a re-run of the 2023 final. They last faced Juventus in the group stage of 2015/16, Manuel Pellegrini's final season in charge before making way for Guardiola. His side lost 2-1 from 1-0 up in Manchester before Juve completed the double with a 1-0 triumph in Turin. However, results in the other four matches led to City topping the group and plotting a path to the semifinals, where they lost 1-0 to eventual winners Real Madrid.
