The San Francisco Giants are eyeballing an upgrade at second base, and a two-time All-Star may be eyeballing a move to the Bay Area.
San Francisco has been steadily losing ground in the National League West division race over the past several seasons. With staff ace Blake Snell set to depart for greener pastures this winter, the amount of space between the Giants and the rival Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, and Arizona Diamondbacks is poised to increase.
However, according to an article by Christopher Kline of Fansided, Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman appears to be a player on the move this offseason. He lists the Giants as one of the prospective suitors for the nine-year veteran.
At first, it appears suspicious that San Francisco would consider signing Bregman, with the team already employing Matt Chapman at third base.
However, according to a Nov. 7 report by USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Bregman is open to a positional move from third base to second base.
According to FanGraphs, the Giants currently have the uninspiring Casey Schmitt penciled in as a second baseman. Bregman would certainly represent an upgrade at the position if he were to join San Francisco and move away from the hot corner.
A two-time World Series champion with the Astros, the team that drafted him second overall in the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft, Bregman has a career WAR of 39.6 while hitting .272 with 191 home runs and 663 RBI since making his big-league debut in 2016.
Jesse Rogers of ESPN polled 18 Major League Baseball executives on whether Bregman will leave Houston this winter. By an 11-7 vote, those executives said "yes."
Rogers quoted one anonymous executive as saying, "Bregman moving to second base seemed directed at the Giants."
