Sue Bird gives sage advice to the incoming 2025 WNBA rookies image

If anybody knows what it takes to be successful in the WNBA, it’s the legend Sue Bird, who recently made an appearance Flau'jae Johnson's "Best of Both Worlds" podcast.

During the appearance, the star athlete asked Bird about the natural ups and downs that come with being a rookie, to which she shared some helpful advice: "In college, you don't lose a lot... so you've kind of got to adjust to the losing, if I'm being honest," Bird explained. "This is so cliché, don't get too high with the highs, too low with the lows, all that stuff," she continued.

"But it's really true when it comes to the losing, because you're going to lose more than you ever have in your life. This is just a part of it," she added. Seems like helpful advice that rookies should definitely heed.

Meanwhile, Bird and Megan Rapinoe were two of the subjects featured for the debut of Esquire's inaugural Maverick of the Sports segment in April, where the publication highlighted nine athletes breaking the mold, and the dynamic duo gave us a glimpse into not just their post-retirement life, but a look at what it truly means to be an activist in 2025. 

It was in that segment where Bird discussed the importance of speaking out: "If I feel like an injustice is happening, or if there’s somewhere where we can lend our voice to grow women’s sports, that’s who we are and how we live, and the things that we really want to spend our time doing."

And that, ladies and gents, is the totality of Sue Bird.
