The Miami Hurricanes made one of the biggest splashes of the winter portal cycle by landing former Georgia quarterback Carson Beck — a move that pulled him away from both the Bulldogs and the NFL Draft. Beck was originally set to begin his pro career but pivoted after suffering an elbow injury in the SEC Championship.

Now healthy enough to resume throwing, Beck wrapped spring with Miami, though his participation was limited. With the Hurricanes' spring practices concluded, attention now turns to what’s next — namely, more additions via the spring portal, which opens April 16.

Beck has become the key piece Miami needed to build off a 10-3 season that just narrowly missed a College Football Playoff appearance. But if the Hurricanes want to maximize their momentum, they may need to bolster their receiving corps — something CBS Sports' Chris Hummer sees as a likely priority.

"Miami will have one of the best offensive lines and most experienced quarterbacks in college football next season," Hummer wrote. "But there is a question about the wide receiver corps after Xavier Restrepo, Jacolby George, and Isaiah Horton all moved on this offseason. What's left is a young wide receiver room and LSU transfer CJ Daniels. Thus, you can expect Miami to go hard after a high-end receiver if one pops up in the portal this spring. The Hurricanes went all in on Beck; now they want to get him weapons."

The three departures Hummer mentioned were Miami’s top targets last season, and while there’s excitement about young playmakers like true freshman Malachi Toney and sophomore JoJo Trader, Daniels is currently the only receiver with meaningful experience.

Mario Cristobal and offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson  are likely determined to avoid putting Beck in the kind of situation he endured at Georgia last year. After losing Ladd McConkey and Brock Bowers to  NFL, there was a clear drop-off in talent that led to a significant dip in Beck and Georgia's offensive production: 12 interceptions, a 10-point drop in completion rate, and 31 receiver drops on the season.

Unlike Cam Ward, who came to Miami to elevate his draft stock, Beck is looking to rebuild his — and adding a proven pass-catcher through the portal might be just what he needs.
