Colorado assistant football coach Warren Sapp isn’t the man making the final call on the matter, but the Buffs’ pass rush coordinator shared a noteworthy remark with Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter that could be taken as an indicator for the team’s quarterback competition:
“When you have that ball in your hand, you’re carrying the hopes and dreams of this whole university,” Sapp said.
Does that mean Salter is the definitive starter? It sounds like it. The idea of playing Salter and four-star Carrolton, Georgia product Julian Lewis has been floated, too.
“Before spring football practice sprung again Tuesday at Colorado, a certain controversy already had started to bloom under head coach Deion Sanders,” USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer wrote.
“It’s all about the quarterbacks: Who will replace Sanders’ son Shedeur at the most important position on the field?
“Will it be the veteran transfer from Liberty, Kaidon Salter?

“Or the hotshot rookie recruit from Georgia, Julian 'JuJu' Lewis?
“Could it even be both?”
Lewis is the long-term option in Boulder with a $1.2 million NIL price tag, and Salter is the one-year gap QB Pat Shurmur sought in the transfer portal.
“Colorado might even be in the market for a transfer quarterback, offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said Tuesday. The Buffaloes recently signed Julian Lewis as their QB of the future but might have room for a transfer with a year of eligibility left, Shurmur said,” Schrotenboer reported in December.
Expect Salter to start, but for Coach Prime and Shurmur to find times to deploy Lewis in special packages.
