A 5-12 record this past season got head coach Matt Eberflus fired from the Chicago Bears. They’ve since replaced him with a pair of high-profile hires, including new head coach Ben Johnson, who has a specialty in the offensive side of the ball.
To help replace what Eberflus brought to the table, the Bears have also hired former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen, who specializes in defense.
Now they need to get these coaches some pieces to work with.
Recently, Chi City Sports’ Andy Jachim named one free agency target who could help the Bears in 2025. He suggested Chicago should add former New Orleans Saints and Detroit Lions defensive lineman Marcus Davenport, who was a first-round pick in 2018.
"A high upside guy on the market that has familiarity with the new personnel in Chicago is Marcus Davenport," Jachim wrote. "Based on his recent injury history, the former first-round draft pick would come at a cheap price for the Bears if they choose to pursue him in free agency."
While Davenport hasn't lived up to his potential as of late, he's shown signs of being a star player, especially when he played for the new Bears' defensive coordinator in New Orleans.
"Davenport thrived under Allen’s pass-rush heavy system in New Orleans that he will bring to Chicago," Jachim added. "In 2021, the former UTSA Roadrunner collected nine sacks and 39 total tackles in just 11 games. Davenport finished his time in New Orleans with 21.5 sacks in five seasons, showing that he could work well in a defensive system that prioritized his ability to get to the quarterback."
If he can stay healthy, the Bears could get a motivated defender with a huge chip on his shoulder.
