The future of New York Jets running back Breece Hall is up in the air as the former second-round pick enters the final year of his contract.
The first sign of trouble was new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealing that the team wants to deploy a three-man backfield in 2025, with Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis, which isn't likely to sit well with Hall in a contract year when he has to post big numbers if he wants a lucrative long-term pact in 2026.
"I think, mentally, [Hall] is in a good place, but I would say that we have three running backs on this team that we're going to utilize as much as possible," Glenn said, per ESPN's Rich Cimini.
Adding fuel to the fire, Hall has made a few cryptic tweets this offseason as speculation has swirled.
Given the uncertainty surrounding Hall, Last Word on Sports' David Latham began dreaming up possible landing spots if he's traded. Latham named the Kansas City Chiefs as one of them.
The Kansas City Chiefs have not featured a true three-down back since the peak Kareem Hunt days. While they’ve managed to get by with Isiah Pacheco handling starting duties, this team could use a true three-down threat. Head coach Andy Reid used to be notorious for turning his starting running backs into unstoppable forces, but he hasn’t had the talent to execute his vision over the past few years. That could change with a Breece Hall trade, as the former second-round pick has 2,000-yard potential in this offense.
While the Chiefs still have Isiah Pacheco, re-signed Kareem Hunt and signed Elijah Mitchell, there are concerns with the group. Pacheco and Mitchell have had issues staying healthy, and Hunt didn't look great last season and is about to turn 30.
Hall would be a welcomed addition, for sure. He's an explosive back who can take carries to the house from anywhere on the field, and Hall is a fantastic pass-catcher capable of giving Patrick Mahomes another outlet.
Hall did not make the leap we were all expecting in 2024, but it's hard to blame that all on him after the Jets sported a dysfunctional offense, partly thanks to a putrid offensive line. Safe to say, Mahomes and Andy Reid run a much tighter ship and will sport a better offensive line than the 2024 Jets.
The biggest concern is that the Chiefs could give up as much as a third-round pick in a trade for a player who may not be around for more than one season, as Hall is slated to be a free agent in 2026.
However, with the Chiefs always going for it, it still makes sense to take the risk on a player who could be a huge upgrade on offense.
