With the offseason underway for nearly half of the league, one important date is beginning to take shape.
On May 12, the fate of the league’s future will begin to be decided as the NBA hosts the 2025 draft lottery. With the main draw being Duke star Cooper Flagg, who is the projected No. 1 pick, how the ping pong balls land on that day will shape the next decade for the league and could easily swing the outlook for multiple franchises.
Among the teams hoping for some lottery luck in May is the Chicago Bulls. After a disappointing finish to the season as the No. 9 seed in the play-in tournament, the Bulls’ focus has begun to shift to the offseason.
On Monday, the league held its annual tiebreakers to determine draft positioning for teams who finished the season with the same record. The Bulls were tied with the Dallas Mavericks at 39-43 and thus had a tiebreaker to determine which squad would hold the 11th-best odds in the lottery.
Unfortunately for Chicago, the Mavericks won the tiebreaker and earned a spot ahead of the Bulls. With Chicago now holding the 12th-best odds in the draft lottery, its already slim hopes of making it into the top four or even securing the top pick have taken another hit.
Last season, the Bulls secured the No. 11 pick in the draft and took Matas Buzelis. While the rookie hasn’t necessarily jumped off the page early in his career, he looks to be one of the best picks from what was widely considered a weak draft.

With Chicago finishing in almost the exact same spot in 2025, it could add another intriguing young player to its exciting group. While the future of the Bulls likely doesn’t include Flagg or any of the other top prospects, another young star could soon be playing in the United Center.
