The Boston Red Sox lost Triston Casas to a left patellar tendon injury. With a hole at first base now, the team could swing a surprise trade to replace him.
Casas will undergo surgery and will miss the rest of the season. The team has called up Abraham Toro to help fill in, but the Red Sox have postseason aspirations and will likely start looking for upgrades. Rhys Hoskins of the Milwaukee Brewers could be a candidate that not many are talking about.
Hoskins signed a two-year, $34 million deal with the Milwaukee Brewers last season. He hit 26 home runs, but he was not the player fans are used to seeing at the plate. However, this season, he looks more like the player he was before he tore his ACL. He has four home runs and is hitting .266 with a .801 OPS.
The Brewers are off to a slow start and do not look to be turning a corner anytime soon. After the season, Hoskins will be a free agent, and if the Brewers fall out of contention, Hoskins could be moved near the trade deadline.
Hoskins could slot in as the everyday first baseman for Alex Cora. Hoskins has never been a hitter who carries a high average, but this season he looks to have found a balance between his power stroke and getting on base. He would be an upgrade over what the Red Sox were getting from Casas and would not come with any sort of commitment past this year.

Casas was slashing .182/.277/.303 in 29 games. Hoskins is having a better year and has a .826 career OPS. The Brewers will be a team to monitor near the trade deadline. They have many players whom they could look to part with if the season slips away from them.
