Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney returned from long layoffs to compete on a historic fight card in the middle of Times Square. The year of turmoil for both fighters resulted in unfavorable outcomes for both.
Garcia (24-2) main-evented the fights, hosted by The Ring Magazine. “King Ry” lost against former sparring partner Rolando Romero (17-2) for the WBA (Regular) welterweight title. Meanwhile, Haney (32-0) beat Jose Carlos Ramirez, but it was a sour victory given his performance.
Known for his fast hands, Garcia was tentative against Romero. The former was coming off a one-year-long suspension after testing positive for ostarine following a win against Haney. Garcia was in good spirits heading into his return, but his hopes and dreams came crashing down early, thanks to a second-round knockdown by Romero.

Romero used inside body shots to punish Garcia. “Rolly” pushed Garcia back a few times, not giving him a chance to control any aspect of the fight. Within the clinch, Garcia looked a lot more conformable, but he could not land significant damage to a confident Romero, who won via unanimous decision.

Per CompuBox, Garcia landed 65 of 207 shots. Romero landed 54 of 267. Outside the no-contest, Garcia is now 1-2 in his past four fights.
Haney beat Ramirez (29-3) in what was a no-risk, high-reward fight. The former undisputed champion didn’t fight for a year after the Garcia debacle. It looked like he had plenty of ring rust to pass around, as Haney’s performance was ridiculed by those on social media and the broadcast.
Only 503 combined punches were thrown between both fighters. Garcia and Haney are scheduled to compete in a rematch later this year. Though Haney won and Garcia lost, their performances and Garcia’s loss could balance one another out.
A true showman, Teofimo Lopez (22-1) turned back the clock against Arnold Barboza Jr. to retain the WBO and The Ring super lightweight titles in the most entertaining fight of the night. Lopez used brilliant footwork, fast hands, and the entire ring to work past his latest opponent.

Lopez looked like a man reborn, performing like the elite fighter who dethroned Vasiliy Lomachenko a few years ago. He hung by the ropes, danced, and had his hands down at various points. Barboza (32-1) couldn’t find any momentum against Lopez, who landed flurries to the body and head.
Per CompuBox, Lopez landed 126 of 571 punches, while Barboza landed 70 of 424. The champion has now won six straight and called out Jaron Ennis after.
The first pro fight of the night saw Reito Tsutsumi earn his first win against a game Levale Whittington. The Japanese fighter utilized uppercuts and hooks to punish his opponent, who also gave it his all. Tsutsumi is an ambassador for The Ring, so expect big matchups for him as he heads on a path to potential superstardom.
