There were 31 FBS head-coaching changes in 2023 – a 23.1% turnover rate that stretched into February.
The 2024 college football season figures to have fewer coaching changes as a result, and so far there has been a Power 4 coach fired in 2024. The carousel, however, is starting to turn. Southern Mississippi's Will Hall and East Carolina's Mike Houston were fired after Week 8 – the first two in-season coaching changes of this cycle. Kennesaw State's Jeff Bohannon parted ways with the program on Nov. 11.
Fresno State's Jeff Tedford stepped down on July 15, and Utah State's Blake Anderson was fired on July 20. That means we have five coaching changes so far. There have been an average of 25 coaching changes per year from 2020-23.

Jeff Tedford, Fresno State
Resigned (July 15): Tedford resigned because of health concerns. Tedford, 62, was in his second stint with the program and had compiled a 19-8 record in two seasons after replacing Kalen DeBoer. Tedford had a 127-97 through 16 seasons with Cal and Fresno State. He was replaced by interim coach Tim Skipper.
Blake Anderson, Utah State
Fired (July 20): Anderson was dismissed on July 10. According to the Associated Press, Anderson "was fired for contacting a potential domestic violence victim and a witness to the incident after an Aggies player was arrested." Anderson allegedly failed to report the case. Anderson was 23-17 in three seasons with the Aggies. He finished 11-2 in 2021, but the program had back-to-back 6-7 seasons leading into 2024. Nate Dreiling is the interim coach for the Aggies this season.
Will Hall, Southern Miss
Fired (Oct. 20): Hall – who had a 14-30 record –was fired at Southern Mississippi after a 44-28 loss to Arkansas State in Week 8. The Golden Eagles were 1-6 when Hall was dismissed as the head coach. Hall had a 31-9 record at West Georgia in the FCS before taking the Southern Miss job. The Golden Eagles finished 7-6 and won the Lending Tree Bowl under Hall in 2022, but they were 3-9 in 2023 and could not get momentum this season. Reed Stringer is the interim head coach.
Mike Houston, East Carolina
Fired (Oct. 20): Houston was fired after the Pirates lost 45-28 to Army on Oct. 19. East Carolina fell to 3-4, and Houston – who was 37-6 in three seasons with James Madison before arriving at East Carolina in 2019 – was let go. Houston finished 27-38 with the Pirates. According to ESPN.com, East Carolina athletic director Jon Gilbert said, “a change is needed to move the program forward. We have high expectations and those are not changing." Blake Harrell is the interim coach for the Pirates.
Mike Bloomgren, Rice
Fired (Oct. 27): Rice parted ways with Bloomgren on Oct. 27. Bloomgren took over at Rice in 2018 and endured five straight losing seasons before dropping to 2-6 this year. The Owls did make bowl appearances in 2022 and 2023, but Bloomgren had a 24-52 record. Pete Alamar will be in the interim coach this season.
Brian Bohannon, Kennesaw State
Fired/resigned (Nov. 11): Bohannon said he resigned, but Kennesaw State announced the coach was fired on Nov. 11. Either way, the Owls' coach is out after compiling a 1-8 record in 2024. Bohannon was 72-38 at Kennesaw State and saw the program make the transition to the FBS in 2024.
