Patrick Mahomes is finally free of his longtime mohawk — and he’s wondering why it took him so long.

The Kansas City Chiefs star, 29, revealed at a press conference shared by Fox4 Kansas City on April 23 that superstition kept him hanging on to the hairstyle through multiple Super Bowl victories.

“I’ve wanted to do it for a while but it was kind of one of those superstitions,” Mahomes said. “I kept winning the Super Bowl, which is a good thing, but I didn’t want to cut the hair while I was doing it.”

After the Chiefs’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl 2025, Mahomes decided it was time. He had told teammates during the season that win or lose, he was getting a haircut.

Looking back at old clips, Mahomes joked he “can’t believe” his teammates let him “keep that nappy hair for so long.”

At first, he wanted to cut it all off, but his longtime barber, DeJuan Bonds, convinced him to go a little at a time instead of making a drastic change. The result? A shorter, more polished style that Mahomes now plans to stick with.

“I’ll be keeping this going forward,” he said.
