49ers' Brock Purdy extension gets $50 million update after George Kittle deal image

The San Francisco 49ers are still working to extend Brock Purdy. They have already extended star tight end George Kittle, but now they need to make sure they ink their quarterback to a deal as well.

The fact that Purdy's extension is taking so long is both concerning and normal. He figures to become the highest-paid player in franchise history, and it's understandable that the 49ers are making sure they're careful with the language and figures in the deal. However, The Athletic's Mike Jones provided an update on where the two sides might stand.

"For now, Purdy is slated to play the final season of his rookie contract on a salary of $5 million," wrote Jones. "The 49ers have been trying to work out a deal that gives the quarterback long-term security and also avoids any holdouts this summer or early season. Purdy is expected to wind up with a contract that will pay him around $50 million per season and places him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. San Francisco just reached a long-term deal with Purdy’s top target, George Kittle, that made Kittle the highest-paid tight end in NFL history. It now seems like a matter of when, not if, Purdy gets paid."

The 49ers have remained adamant that Purdy is in their long-term plans. After being the last pick in the draft a few years ago, he has led them to a Super Bowl and two NFC Championships.

Some experts fear that he will not be able to perform at a high level without an array of superstars around him, but the 49ers have to be confident in him if they plan on giving him $50 million a year. They have taken steps to ensure Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle will be available to him.

Purdy is participating in the voluntary portion of the offseason. The 49ers will likely try and get a deal done before training camp starts in July. Kittle's extension allows the team to focus solely on paying Purdy now.
