Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was the surprise of the 2025 NFL Draft. The once-regarded first-round pick didn't get selected until No. 144 overall, which came on Day 3 of the draft in a surprising turn of events.
Plenty of reports have come out since then regarding and hinting at why Sanders was on the board that long, although none of that matters going forward. What does matter is the future. Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo had some advice for Sanders, per Ryan Sanudo of The US Sun.
"I think the biggest thing (is), it's not where you start, it's where you finish," Romo said. "You've got to remember I was undrafted (and) as an undrafted player, I know the work starts when you get there at another level, and it's a great opportunity. It's a privilege to be drafted at all, even for me as an undrafted guy, it was a privilege to have some team want you to come in and compete."
Romo, who went undrafted, had a long career in the NFL despite the chips being stacked against him early in his career. Yet, as he said, it's not how start but how you finish.
Romo also admitted he thought he would be drafted himself, but said that life "resets whenever you get drafted, and that's what happens now."
So, while Sanders didn't want to be on the board for that amount of time, Romo's advice might be encouraging to Sanders: It's all about how you finish.
