Shilo Sanders' Tampa Bay Buccaneers controversy explained: why he went undrafted image

The 2025 NFL Draft brought many surprising and shocking moments. From late round picks like Shedeur Sanders dropping to the fifth round and Quinn Ewers picked in the seventh, many fans were kept on their toes.

However, what really has sports fans talking is who went undrafted. Shilo Sanders was considered a #29 overall safety prospect according to CBS Sports. Followers of the player were rather shocked that he didn’t secure a spot with a team.

After the draft concluded, Sanders, alongside his brother and father, Shedeur Sanders and Deion Sanders, took to Twitch to share their thoughts.

“Both of y’all, you’re resilient,” the former NFL player reportedly told his two sons.“They tested us this draft,” the 25-year-old said, with his father replying, “they tested the whole family.”

While the former Colorado Buffaloes star wasn’t selected during the three day event, he was picked up by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent on April 26, 2025.

Fans of the player are excited that Sanders is continuing his football journey with the Bucs, however, questions surrounding his lack of attention from other teams isn’t going away.

As background, Sanders started his career at the University of South Carolina for two seasons before transferring to Jackson State. In 2021, the safety had quite an impressive year with thirty-nine tackles and four interceptions.

However, the following year, Sanders suffered an ACL injury which resulted in him only playing in seven games. Following his stint in Jackson, Sanders entered the NCAA transfer portal and joined his father and brother at Colorado.

As to why Sanders wasn’t immediately drafted, some fans have speculated that his prior injury may have impacted his chances as he sat out for two college seasons.

Others are speculating that some of his stats weren’t quite up to par. Sanders ran a 4.52-second 40-yard dash at Colorado's pro day, which isn’t considered relatively fast for a safety.

Aside from some arguable stats, Sanders has face some off field controversy. In 2015, the football player was accused of assaulting John Darjean, a security guard, after he had tried to confiscate his phone. Darjean then sued Sanders in civil court — and won a default judgment against him of over $11 million.
