WWE has announced that Survivor Series this November will be held at Petco Park in San Diego, home of MLB’s San Diego Padres. The event will take place on Saturday November 29th. It will be the 39th edition of the Survivor Series, and be the first to take place outdoors. More meaningfully, it will be the first edition to be held in a stadium, following WWE’s recent trend of moving increasingly more of their Premier Live Events to the stadium environment.

First held in 1987, Survivor Series was once considered part of WWE’s original Big 4 Pay-Per-View events, along with Wrestlemania, Summerslam, and Royal Rumble. In more recent years, its popularity had fallen behind the other 3 events, the popularity of which saw them all graduate some time ago to the stadium setting.
In 2022, WWE had planned to hold the increasingly popular Money in the Bank event at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, before lack of demand saw them move the event indoors to the MGM Grand. In the three years since, WWE has seen weekly attendance escalate to heights not seen since 2002 when Steve Austin and The Rock were last on top. This weeks announcement proves one more product of that heightened interest.
2022 also saw Survivor Series become synonymous with WarGames, a two-ringed steel cage match with teams of 5 entering at staggered intervals. The concept, first invented by Dusty Rhodes in 1987 for Jim Crockett Promotions, has been a part of WWE since Triple H’s days running NXT, where they held a men's and women's match annually from 2017 to 2021. In 2022, when Triple H took over creative for WWE’s main roster, he took the concept with him. The last 3 editions of Survivor Series have all had both a men’s and women’s WarGames match on the card.
No announcement has yet been made whether 2025 will see the trend continue. In an outdoor stadium it may be a tougher ask without the presence of a large canopy to lower the double-sized cage from.
As the home of both Rey and Dominic Mysterio, one could easily envision major involvement for both of them. Sitting right on the southern border, WWE’s recent acquisition of Mexican Lucha Libre promotion AAA might also factor in.
