A third successive 1-0 victory for Real Madrid in La Liga kept them within shouting distance of Barcelona at the top of the table, as Arda Guler secured a narrow victory on the road at Getafe on Wednesday.
As has been the case of late, Real Madrid were far from convincing, but managed to scrap out the win. Guler was one of a few fringe Real Madrid players, alongside Endrick, to get the start as Carlo Ancelotti rang the changes with the Copa del Rey final looming on the weekend. While Endrick withered in his first league start of the season, Guler was bright and paid dividends midway through the opening 45 minutes with a smart right-footed effort that squeaked past David Soria in goal.
That was it for Real Madrid on the day in front of goal. Vinicius Jr. was incisive on a number of occasions, but after he was withdrawn with 20 minutes to go, Rodrygo provided little off the bench. Los Blancos were forced to hang on for dear life through six minutes of stoppage time as Eduardo Camavinga picked up an injury after the visitors were already out of substitution windows, but they managed to see it out.
Getafe created very little in front of goal in the opening half, but as Real Madrid faded and chose to hang on to their one-goal lead, the hosts grew into the game, spurred on by a positive substitute appearance from Alvaro Rodriguez.
Yet in the end, they could not find the key moment required, and Real Madrid drew back within four points of Barcelona at the top of the table. By the eye test, the title race may feel as though it’s just a bit out of reach for Real Madrid, but on paper, they remain within arm’s reach for now.

Getafe vs. Real Madrid live updates, highlights from La Liga
FULLTIME: Getafe 0-1 Real Madrid
The visitors were far from sharp, as has been the case for quite some time this season, but they get the job done! Real Madrid get the goal in the first half from Arda Guler, and while they faded after the break, they hung on, including the added time when they played a man down due to Eduardo Camavinga's injury.
The La Liga title race remains on...for now, at least!
90+7 min: Chance, Getafe! WHAT A SAVE BY THIBAUT COURTOIS WITH TIME RUNNING OUT! Getafe counter after Rodrygo is dispossessed in the penalty area, and Alvaro Rodriguez chests the ball down and goes for goal on the turn, but it's too close to the goalkeeper and Courtois is smart to it! That's the game!
90+5 min: A scuffle breaks out in the Real Madrid penalty area, and Peter Gonzalez is booked for his part. It came as the Getafe substitute was angry about...something...and gets pulled out of the fracas by two Real Madrid players. A testy finish to this match.
90+1 min: Chance, Getafe! WHAT A STOP BY THIBAUT COURTOIS! Getafe get right into the attack after the restart. The Real Madrid goalkeeper makes a great stop from Alvaro Rodriguez's backheel flick, but doesn't completely hold onto the ball. As he recovers and jumps on it, Rodriguez pounces and tries to kick it into the net, but Courtois already has it in his grasp.
It's a painful one for the goalkeeper, and Rodriguez is booked for that late swing of the boot straight into Courtois' gut.
87th min: It's astonishing that Getafe have made it this long without a single player booked, but that run finally ends as Eduardo Camavinga skips past two or three opponents in midfield before being clipped and felled by Luis Milla. Camavinga needs treatment after a hard fall.
Camavinga tries to continue but he cannot, as he's hurt his back in the fall to the turf from the last tackle. The man who came on at halftime looks like he needs to come off, and he will be withdrawn as six minutes of added time are shown.
Real Madrid are out of substitute windows, so they cannot replace him. The visitors will have to finish the game a man down.
83rd min: More substitutions for Getafe, as the second half has been inundated with stoppages and unable to progress smoothly. Borja Mayoral is replaced by Juanmi, and Ismael Beckoucha comes on for Djene.
78th min: The referee goes over to the touchline having a discussion with both managers. There is a policeman in the conversation as well, and the replay suggests that Aurelien Tchouameni has alerted the official to racist chanting from behind the goal. Not what you want to see, as play is eventually allowed to continue.
Dani Ceballos replaces Arda Guler during the stoppage.
75th min: The home fans whistle for a foul as Aurelien Tchouameni falls over with Borja Mayoral backing him down, and the referee lets play on as both were a bit naughty. Unable to get up with Mayoral on top of him, Tchouameni clowns his opponent as they untangle. Mayoral isn't too happy with that, and gives Tchouameni a love tap in the cheek pushing him away.
The Getafe striker is lucky that there was no further action, as in the world of VAR, he could have been punished for that, even if it was soft. Don't touch the opponent's face! It's asking for trouble!
73rd min: Chance, Getafe! WHAT AN AWFUL MISS FROM ALVARO RODRIGUEZ! Getafe have a counter-attack and get behind the Real Madrid back line, and the cross from the left finds Rodriguez all alone at the penalty spot. He picks up the ball and fires on goal before the defenders react, but rifles it wide of the right post! THAT was the chance, and he's failed to take it!
In the aftermath, Carlo Ancelotti makes a change up front, protecting Vinicius Jr. from any harm the rest of the way as Rodrygo comes on in his place. The man to enter is more suited to the No. 9 role than Vini, which is probably part of the reason for the swap as well.
69th min: Getafe make a change in midfield as Peter Federico replaces Terrats. Moments later, the referee shows Aurelien Tchouameni a ridiculous yellow card for a clearly clean tackle. The Frenchman came flying in with a deep step, but gets all ball before the Getafe player goes flying over his leg. It's a legal tackle and the referee's flubbed that one.
67th min: Chance, Real Madrid! Vinicius Jr. creates space for himself dribbling laterally across the top of the penalty area, but his right-footed effort just agonizingly misses the top-right corner! Not far off!
The home fans are frustrated that there wasn't a foul called early in the buildup, and someone on the Getafe bench is booked for their protests.
64th min: Carlo Ancelotti makes another change as Endrick, who was largely invisible in his hour of work, exits for a Jude Bellingham cameo.
That begs the question who will play center-forward for Madrid, and it looks to be Vinicius Jr. who has taken a central position up front.
59th min: Bernat stops a Real Madrid counter-attack with a foul as the visitors look to push forward off a turnover, but the referee refuses to book the Getafe left-back, which has Lucas Vazquez, who is wearing the armband for Madrid tonight, deep in conversation with the official. Carlo Ancelotti is also upset on the touchline. They have an understandable complaint.
55th min: Chance, Getafe! The hosts have had better movement into the attacking third to begin this half, and they finally work their first quality chance! It comes off a cross from the left by Djene deep near the corner flag, and Alvaro Rodriguez out-jumps Raul Asensio to get his head to the ball, but he puts it over!
50th min: Getafe make a double change, which in the 50th minute makes very little sense, as they've thrown away a sub window for five pointless minutes. It's Coba da Costa to come on for Juan Berrocal, while Alvaro Rodriguez comes on to replace Juan Iglesias. That means a likely switch to a 4-4-2 formation.
2nd half kickoff: The players have emerged from the tunnel and the second half is under the way, with Real Madrid making an alteration. Carlo Ancelotti will bring Eduardo Camavinga on, in place of David Alaba who had a shaky first half. That will move Aurelien Tchouameni to center-back, with Camavinga moving into midfield.
HALFTIME: Getafe 0-1 Real Madrid
A truly pedestrian first half from both teams as Real Madrid have dominated the match and been pragmatic about it. Endrick too a number of lumps early, and after the referee told Getafe to knock it off, Madrid faced little resistance from there.
Arda Guler's excellent goal was really the only exciting moment of the first half, while Djene's goal-line clearance kept Madrid from going two goals in front. As the unquestioned leader of the Madrid attack today, Vinicius Jr. cooked.

32nd min: Chance, Real Madrid! CLEARED OFF THE LINE BY DJENE! A beautiful ball over the top for Endrick unlocks the Getafe back line, and he plays a one-two with Vinicius Jr. to do the rest, poking the ball on frame. Yet the shot bobbles off a defender which gives the Getafe captain time to race back and hoof it away moments before it could bounce over the line!
30th min: Any semblance of attacking intent that Getafe had before the Real Madrid goal has evaporated, as they have not worked a shot since that point. Real Madrid have been in control of the match, and seem content to force Getafe out of their shell given their lead.
21st min: GOAL! REAL MADRID! Arda Guler rewards Carlo Ancelotti for the faith with the game's opening goal! A vicious counter run by Vinicius Jr. down the right at first comes to nothing, but the recycle falls to Guler at the top of the penalty area sees his right-footed effort knuckle and dip between the goalkeeper and the left post! A prefectly placed strike!

18th min: The game grinds to a halt every time Getafe have the ball, as they look to do nothing with it, but Real Madrid have some strong attacking intent!
Lucas Vasquez springs Vinicius Jr. down the right side of the penalty area, and his cutback to the far side is pinpoint at the feet of Fran Garcia, but his deflected effort is saved low at the left post. Their first real chance!
8th min: Now Vinicius is bumped hard down the left by Juan Berrocal, who plays the man and not the ball, and that causes the referee to pull over Getafe captain Djene to tell him enough is enough with the overt physicality.
It had little effect, because moments after the restart Arda Guler is shoved off the ball in midfield, which draws another whistle. The home fans won't like it, but Getafe have to play football instead of American football.
6th min: It's been a tough early start for Endrick who's ended up on the turf a number of times early on. Getafe have been physical with the young striker so far.
Kickoff: They're under way in Getafe at Estadio Coliseum!

45 mins to kickoff: There's been plenty of speculation about Carlo Ancelotti's future at Real Madrid. Everyone seems to expect him to leave at the end of this season (or maybe even earlier), but a stunning comeback in the La Liga title race could completely change the narrative.
They need Barcelona to slip for that to be possible, but they also need to keep pace until that potentially occurs. They probably cannot drop points from here on out. Where would he go if he does depart? Could he head back to Italy? There's been quiet rumors of a move to AC Milan.

1 hour to kickoff: The Getafe lineup is in, and there are just a few changes, including a tactical switch from head coach Pepe Bordalas.
They've switched to a 4-5-1, with Juanmi benched for an additional defender in Juan Berrocal. That's nothing new for Real Madrid, as they are often facing teams who add extra midfielders or defenders when playing them.
1 hour 15 mins to kick: Today is also a big chance for Arda Guler. Like Endrick, the Turkish international has faded after a strong early start to his Real Madrid career, with just one goal on the league season coming against Girona in early December. He assisted one against Leganes a month ago, but hasn't been able to prove he can be a more reliable option just yet.
If either he or Endrick have a good game today, there could be noise for them to start this weekend's Copa del Rey final given how poor Rodrygo has been lately.

1 hour 30 mins to kick: Endrick has a huge chance today to take a step forward in his development at Real Madrid. He exploded onto the scene at the club early on, but has faded quite a bit. He has not scored a La Liga goal since August 25, and while he's been excellent in the Copa del Rey, he has flopped in all other competitions.
With the possibility of Xabi Alonso coming over from Bayer Leverkusen next season to replace Carlo Ancelotti, Endrick could be an important player in the squad considering he's the only true No. 9 on the team, and he would be a good fit for the potential new boss's tactics.
1 hour 45 mins to kick: Gotta love Real Madrid and their classic early lineup release! As expected, Kylian Mbappe does not feature, even though he has returned to training. The club is reportedly saving him for the Copa del Rey final on the weekend, and understandably so.
Mbappe isn't the only one rested for the trophy decider, however, as a number of other Real Madrid stars do not feature in the XI. Jude Bellingham, Antonio Rudiger, Rodrygo, and Eduardo Camavinga all begin this match on the bench.
Ancelotti keeps the 4-4-2 diamond formation they experimented with early in the season and fell back on last weekend against Athletic Club.
2 hours to kickoff: Real Madrid are still in the hunt for the La Liga title, but Carlo Ancelotti will know that the most important game of the season left on the schedule is the Copa del Rey final against Barcelona, as that is their best chance to win a trophy.
He won't take any chances with his players, knowing that game looms on the horizon this weekend.

Getafe vs. Real Madrid lineups, team news
Getafe have a clean bill of health coming into this game, missing only former West Brom winger Allan Nyom with a muscle issue. Otherwise, their entire squad is fit for selection.
However, they are without 21-year-old midfielder Christian Uche who was sent off over the weekend in a 1-0 defeat to Espanyol and will miss out on this match through suspension. That sees Juan Bernat come back into the side after he made a brief substiutite appearance over the weekend.
Left-back Diego Rico returns from his one-game suspension for a red card in the defeat to Las Palmas, but he's been left out of the side, as Djene comes in at that spot while head coach Pepe Bordalas adds an extra defender in Juan Berrocal.
Getafe starting lineup (4-5-1): Soria (GK) — Iglesias, Duarte, Berrocal, Alderete, Djene — Milla, Terrats, Arambarri, Bernat — Mayoral.
Getafe subs: Letacek (GK), Bekhoucha, Sola, C. Perez, da Costa, Santiago, P. Gonzalez, A. Rodriguez, Yildirim, Juanmi.
With Kylian Mbappe still out injured, Carlo Ancelotti has some decisions to make. The most pressing one is regarding struggling forward Rodrygo, who has not scored a La Liga goal since mid-January, a goalless run of 786 league minutes. Real Madrid desperately need a run of form from the Brazilian with Mbappe out, but he has not provided the goods.
That sees Rodrygo brought to teh bench, with Endrick up top alongside Vinicius Jr. in the 4-4-2 diamond he used over the weekend against Athletic Club. Arda Guler or Brahim Diaz come in behind them to give Jude Bellingham and Eduardo Camavinga a rest, while Antonio Rudiger gets a break with David Alaba in the lineup.
Real Madrid are still missing Ferland Mendy for a bit longer, so Fran Garcia gets the start at left-back, while a struggling Lucas Vazquez wears the armband in the effort to help replace the injured Dani Carvajal on the right.
Real Madrid starting lineup (4-4-2 diamond): Courtois (GK) — Vazquez, Asencio, Alaba, F. Garcia — Valverde, Tchouameni, B. Diaz, Guler — Endrick, Vinicius Jr.
Real Madrid subs: Lunin (GK), F. Gonzalez (GK), Vallejo, Rudiger, Camavinga, Modric, Ceballos, Bellingham, Rodrygo.
