Spring training is quickly approaching, but one of free agency's top bats remains unsigned.

Alex Bregman, who has spent all nine of his MLB seasons with the Astros, has yet to make a decision about his next squad as the winter rolls on.

While an extension between the third baseman and his longtime Houston team isn't off the table, there are a number of other franchises, such as the Tigers, that could be a fit for Bregman's combination of consistent power and Gold Glove-level defense at the hot corner.

With rumors about Bregman's 2025 destination still flying around, The Sporting News has you covered on the latest chatter surrounding the free agent infielder.

Astros' six-year, $156 million offer unlikely to get deal done for Bregman

Date: Jan. 27

Source: Ari Alexander

The Astros' six-year, $156 million offer for Bregman that's been floating around throughout the offseason is "unlikely to get a deal done," sources told KPRC 2 Houston reporter Ari Alexander. At Houston's Fan Fest event over the weekend, general manager Dana Brown said re-signing Bregman was "a long shot," but the "door is cracked" on a return.

Bregman has been reportedly seeking up to a $200 million deal in free agency, a potential gap of over $40 million between him and the Astros. Alexander's report added that the Tigers are interested in signing Bregman to a long-term deal, while the Blue Jays, Cubs, and Red Sox have shown "varied levels of sustained interest."

If Bregman were to re-sign in Houston, there's a chance that star second baseman Jose Altuve would move to left field, with Issac Paredes moving to second base.

Houston 'trying to bring back' Alex Bregman, other teams still in mix

Date: Jan. 27

Further connecting a potential reunion between Bregman and the Astros, the New York Post's Jon Heyman reports that Houston is "trying to bring back" its former World Series champion and is "still willing" to do at least a six-year, $156 million deal. Heyman added that there's another team offering a six-year deal with a first-year opt-out, but the money is unknown.

Along with the Astros, the Tigers, Red Sox, and Cubs are among the teams that have expressed interest in Bregman.

Astros' Pressly trade helps make room for Bregman, but deal is no guarantee

Date: Jan. 27

Source: Chandler Rome

On Sunday, the Astros reportedly shipped reliever Ryan Pressly to the Cubs, with Pressly waiving his no-trade clause to facilitate the trade. With money coming off of Houston's payroll in the move, The Athletic's Chandler Rome reported that the Astros were already "intent on dumping" Pressly's contract, and the move wasn't "necessarily a reaction to Alex Bregman's availability."

Rome added that having Pressly's salary off the books will benefit Houston's bid for Bregman, but the two situations were still considered separate matters. Either way, the Astros could be in a better spot to land the third baseman after their trade with Chicago.
