The Indianapolis Colts kicked off Day 2 of the NFL draft by selecting Ohio State defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau with the No. 45 overall pick in the second round.
The selection of Tuimoloau provides depth for the edge rushers on the defensive line, who can develop into a starter down the line. This pick was not only for this season but for the future as well given the financial state of the room.
Laiatu Latu is the only defensive end on the Indy roster who is under contract in 2026.
Tuimoloau provides the Colts with an option as the opposite starter of Latu if they don’t give Kwity Paye an extension between now and next offseason.
He enters the league with experience as a three-year starter for the Buckeyes. He has the ideal size for his position, sitting at 6-foot-4, 265 pounds, with 33 ¾-inch arms. Tuimoloau not only has the body, but he also has the athleticism to make an impact on the field against the run and to get after the quarterback.
Where he can make an impact in Year 1 is on early downs as a run defender. He’s a stout player who can set the edge and does a solid job at tracking down the ball carrier for the tackle. As a pass rusher, he is more effective using his power, but can be more effective as he develops more pass rush moves in his arsenal.
Overall, the Colts get a defensive end prospect who has a high floor as a player and can carve out a larger role in the rotation towards the backend of his rookie season. Tuimoloau also adds to the theme of toughness that first-round pick Tyler Warren is bringing to the roster.
