The Houston Astros are prepared to start the postseason with the American League Wild Card Series. They'll open up at home against the red-hot Detroit Tigers.
The starting rotation could use some work, however, and this is something they could focus on for 2025, especially if they fail to make a deep run this October.
With Justin Verlander's status uncertain, they could target Sonny Gray, who the St. Louis Cardinals may trade this winter.
David Hill of Yardbarker listed Houston as a potential fit for the St. Louis ace.
"Trade deadline acquisition Yusei Kikuchi has impressed but is a free agent after the season. Future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness, potentially leading to his retirement after this season," Hill wrote. "The Astros could use a dependable veteran arm to shore up the rotation. Sonny Gray could be the piece the Astros need."
Gray could certainly help the Astros. Verlander may not be back next season, and Houston could use a top-level starter to replace him. Having Gray next to Framber Valdez would give the Astros a chance to remain at the top of the AL West.
Gray's first season in St. Louis was mostly successful, albeit not quite like his 2023 campaign. The veteran right-hander went 13-9 with a 3.84 ERA with the Cardinals.
However, he does bring swing-and-miss capability to a rotation and is somebody that can eat innings and take the ball in big games, especially in the postseason.
It will be interesting to see if the Astros target him. He certainly will command a hefty return, and the Cardinals could get some solid prospects for him.
