Broncos bring tumultuous tenure of former 3rd-round pick to an end image

The Denver Broncos are a team heading in a much different direction than fans have seen in recent years, and they are eliminating dead weight.

The Broncos have won four of their last six games and are in prime position to earn a trip to the playoffs this year, ending a long drought of missing the postseason. The team is ridding itself of any players that aren't needed for that push and on Monday, it was determined that tight end Greg Dulcich was one of those players.

Dulcich was selected in the third round (No. 80 overall) of the 2022 draft and he came to the team with a ton of promise. He was supposed to be the team's down-field threat at the tight end position and had all the physical tools and athletic ability to become just that.

But injuries, specifically a lingering hamstring injury, slowed him down dramatically. If he could stay healthy this season, it was thought that he could be the vaunted "joker" in Sean Payton's offense. That never came close to happening.

He ended up suiting up for just four games this season before the Broncos began to make him a healthy scratch in favor of Lucas Krull. But the team has decided it no longer has any use for the 24-year-old tight end.

Dulcich will finish his Broncos career with 41 receptions for 464 yards and two touchdowns.

Greg Dulcich could be one of the biggest "what ifs" in Broncos history

It's tough to see the Broncos come to this conclusion, but Dulcich is either too much of an injury risk or a player that Payton and his staff just don't see much value in. Waiving him now gives him a chance to catch on with a new team and start fresh.

Broncos fans will be left to wonder what could have been with Dulcich as he showed flashes of greatness when he was out there. He just couldn't stay healthy and just didn't fit with what this team needed from the position.

The Broncos will march forward with Adam Trautman, Krull and Nate Adkins at tight end. Donald Parham Jr. is also on the practice squad. The team will be expected to address the tight end position this offseason, either in free agency or the draft.
