Shedeur Sanders' historic NFL draft slide is officially over. The Cleveland Browns traded up in the fifth round to select the Colorado product at No.144 overall, sending the No.166 and No.192 overall picks to the Seattle Seahawks for the selection used on Sanders.
Sanders now joins an incredibly crowded Browns' quarterback room that includes Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, and Dillon Gabriel, who the Browns took in the third round on Friday.
With Deshaun Watson expected to miss the entire 2025 season, Cleveland is stacking up on quarterbacks. Sanders has a chance to earn the starting spot, but he will first have to prove he is worthy of being on the roster.
Falling in the draft has not only cost Sanders an immediate starting spot but also a ton of money. According to Spotrac, the 23-year-old's rookie deal with the Browns is projected to be worth $4.6 million over four seasons with a $446,553 signing bonus.
According to ESPN's Jeff Darlington, Sanders made more than $6 million from NIL during the 2024 season, which is more than his entire rookie contract.
If Sanders wins the starting spot and flourishes in Kevin Stefanski's offense with the Browns, it would be the steal of the draft, especially with how cheap his contract is.
Before the draft, Sanders was a projected first-round pick who had a productive collegiate career at Jackson State and Colorado. The Texas native is incredibly accurate and takes care of the ball, and though he could be a distraction due to his circumstances off the field, his slide to the fifth round still doesn't make much sense.
