Oklahoma softball championship history: How Sooners broke NCAA record with a four-peat image

History has been made in Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma is synonymous with the sport of softball. USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium in the state's capital has held the NCAA Women's College World Series every season since 1990, etching itself into softball history.

The venue is not the only part of Oklahoma that is a major contributor to the sport. The Sooners softball team boasts an elite program, one consistently among the best in the NCAA.

The Sooners successfully defended their national championship again, topping Texas in both games to sweep the national championship. It marked a matchup between the top two teams this season, as the Longhorns entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed and the Sooners at No. 2.

This dynasty led by Patty Gasso has already secured its place in NCAA softball history, but it added even more in 2024.

Here's more on how Oklahoma broke an NCAA record with a four-peat.

NCAA softball four-peats history

There had never been a four-peat in the history of the Women's College World Series. Until 2024.

Oklahoma's run began in 2021, the year after COVID-19 canceled the NCAA tournament. The Sooners bested Florida State in Game 3 of the final series to earn the program its fifth title.

The Sooners defended their national championship in dominant fashion the next season. Oklahoma trounced Texas twice to make easy work of the Longhorns in 2022. Patty Gasso's crew made it three in 2023 when the Sooners defeated Florida State 2-0 in the final series.

Oklahoma then completed a third straight sweep and a fourth straight championship-winning season by beating Texas 8-3 in Game 1 and 8-4 in Game 2 of the 2024 Women's College World Series, officially making history as the only program to win four consecutive national championships.

NCAA softball three-peats

The Sooners secured at least the three-peat with its win last year over Florida State in the 2023 Women's College World Series. Outside of Oklahoma's current run, there is only one previous team to string together three titles in a row — UCLA.

The Bruins' exceptional run resulted in three wins in a row in 1988, 1989, and 1990. UCLA knocked off Fresno State all three years, shutting out their in-state rival every time.

When it comes to the history of women's softball, it comes down to three major programs — Oklahoma, Arizona, and UCLA.

There have been 41 national champions named in the sports' existence in the NCAA. The Sooners, Wildcats, and Bruins own 68.3 percent of those titles combined. No other program in the country has more than two.
