The San Antonio Spurs have had a solid start to the season. They are 7-8 and are coming off a win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday despite being without Victor Wembanyama and Devin Vassell.
After two consecutive seasons of reaching just 22 wins, the Spurs look as though their rebuild is nearing an end, especially if their young talent continues to develop. Wembanyama was heating up after his slow start but has been sidelined the past two contests due to a knee injury. Vassell has also missed time as he continues to recover from a foot injury.
The Spurs’ veterans, Chris Paul and Harrison Barnes, as well as their rookie sensation, Stephon Castle, have been major additions and have significantly made an impact on the Spurs’ great start. While San Antonio has started off strong, they still lack scoring, especially off the bench.
They are scoring only 109.6 points per game, which ranks in the bottom 10 of the NBA. The Spurs could change that if they were able to pull off a trade with the Miami Heat for a pair of sharpshooters in Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson.
In a possible trade, the Spurs could send Keldon Johnson, Zach Collins, Malaki Branham and draft picks to Miami for Herro and Robinson. This works out well for both teams as Miami would add more young talent that they could build around if they decide to trade away Jimmy Butler and begin a rebuild. The trade would also free up over $9 million in cap space for the Heat.
For San Antonio, adding Herro and Robinson would give them two great scorers that they desperately need. Herro is off to a torrid start. He is averaging 24.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game while shooting 48.6% from the field and 45.2% from three. He would fit well in the starting lineup, which would likely move Vassell to the small forward position.
Robinson would be a perfect fit off the bench in the Alamo City. The Spurs’ second unit has struggled to score, which has led to them blowing leads. Robinson would help that as he is averaging 10.2 points per game while shooting 38.4% from the field and 36.6% from three.
While this trade does not make the Spurs an immediate contender, it does add to their offensive output. With their defense being elite thanks to Wembanyama, adding more scorers around him would allow the Spurs to take another step forward as they continue their rebuild.
