Colorado's Deion Sanders raises roster concerns, names 10 positions to fill in spring portal image

This coming season marks the third year in Boulder for Colorado head coach and former NFL star Deion Sanders. His first year wasn’t ideal, but last season showed promise—had a couple of key games gone their way, the Buffaloes could have very well found themselves in the Big 12 Championship with a shot at the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, a tough loss derailed those hopes.

The 2025 season will look a bit different, as neither Shedeur Sanders nor Travis Hunter will be suiting up for Colorado. However, Coach Sanders did an impressive job replacing his quarterback with Kaidon Salter. As for Hunter, there’s really no one-for-one replacement—his dominance on both sides of the ball is nearly impossible to replicate.

This past week has been eventful for Sanders. His son and Hunter were honored by having their jerseys retired, cementing their legacy in Colorado football history. It’s a rare accomplishment, especially considering their age. Typically, jersey retirements happen long after players’ careers have ended, but this duo received the honor just months after playing their final snaps in a Colorado uniform.

Deion Sanders also stirred up some controversy recently when he made it clear he wouldn’t be retiring the jerseys of players who competed before his coaching tenure.

Following Colorado’s spring game on Saturday, Sanders addressed the team’s needs in the spring transfer portal. It wasn’t the most reassuring moment, as he listed 10 different positions they’re looking to target. That suggests the Buffaloes are either trying to build depth or coming to terms with gaps they hadn’t previously identified.

“One tremendous defensive tackle, another linebacker or two, two safeties, probably three corners, one receiver that's a grown man, that's a dog, couple of running backs, tight end, maybe a guard, tackle, maybe two centers." Sanders said.

On Wednesday, Sanders publicly criticized Virginia for attempting to poach one of Colorado’s players. Sanders is clearly aiming to make big splashes in the spring portal and bolster the team where it’s most needed.
